Understanding Biting in Early Childhood

Why Do Young Children Bite?

Biting is a common behavior in infants and toddlers and is often a way for young children to communicate when they do not yet have the words to express their feelings and needs.

Children may bite when they are:

Feeling frustrated

Teething

Excited or overwhelmed

Exploring cause and effect

Tired or hungry

Seeking attention or space

How We Respond

At our Centre, we respond to biting calmly and consistently.

We: ✅ Comfort and support the child who has been bitten

✅ Help the child who bit to understand that biting hurts others

✅ Support children to use gentle hands and words

✅ Supervise play closely and identify triggers

✅ Work collaboratively with families when needed

Building Important Skills

Learning to manage emotions, communicate needs, and interact with others takes time.

Through everyday experiences, children develop:

Emotional regulation

Communication skills

Empathy

Problem-solving abilities

Positive relationships

How Families Can Help

You can support your child by:

Naming feelings ("You look frustrated.")

Encouraging simple words and gestures

Reading books about emotions

Modelling gentle touch

Providing plenty of rest and routine

Growing Together

Biting is usually a temporary stage of development. With patience, guidance, and consistent support, children learn positive ways to express themselves and connect with others.

The children will learn all about Australia's amazing wildlife and why conservation is so important. With fun activities and real wildlife encounters, this program is perfect for sparking a love for nature and teaching kids to respect the environment. 🌿
