I was eating breakfast by myself this morning (Yay, school holidays!), and scrolling through my phone at the same time.

It's become such a habit to pick up my phone whenever I have a spare moment. It's such a distraction - pretty harmless - but I've also found that it's developed into a way to fill in ALL the space (and quite often to fill in time when I really should be doing something else!)

I've succeeded this year so far in keeping my phone out of my bedroom so I don't start scrolling when I wake up. But it's still with me most of my waking hours.

So, as I ate my porridge this morning, I was reminded of one of my values - being present. It's certainly one of the most well-known mindfulness practices. And I'm proud that I can say that in most cases, I am truly present with my kids around.

But I've got lots of room for improvement with being present in the little moments with myself. Having deeper thoughts. Being productive with my time. (Not all the time, it's not a phone ban, just something I want to work on).

'Being present with my porridge' is going to become a catchphrase in my mind for a while... just until I can develop some better screen habits.

PS Photo not mine, because I don't care enough to make porridge pretty!

Gold star for this mumma!

Today I accompanied my oldest son to a dentist appointment for tooth extractions. I'd have to say that dentists are one of my LEAST favourite things, but he was brave, I was brave, and everyone survived. (And we have a lovely, caring dentist!)

Now spending some time in the library as a reward! (Oh, and I may have rewarded myself with some chocolate, too!)

Something that is incredibly weird to me is signing off a text message with my name: 'Mum'.
What's weird about motherhood for you?

Phew!

A sure sign of overwhelm for me is when I don't have clean school uniforms for the kids. Usually, it happens in December as the crazy chaos of the season demands more brain space.

But it happened to me today. I was hanging out laundry (thinking I was super organised because I put it in the machine last night, ready to wash this morning!) - and I realised it was sport uniform day. So I threw the uniforms into the dryer.

And then I realised - it's not sport uniform day. It's normal uniform day. I yelled for a status update from my kids... one shirt and one pair of shorts - we were one uniform short.

And all the shirts were currently in the machine getting washed.

Thankful for a dryer, we were able to get everyone dressed in the right uniform, and off to school on time today.

But it's a signal to me - I'm getting overloaded. I need to ask for help (instead of resenting that no-one else thinks about putting on loads of laundry!)

And I need to be kind to myself in these moments, and laugh about the chaos of life.

I had no idea what I was making for dinner tonight, and didn't have much in the house or feel like going to the supermarket. So I whipped up some Dahl and Naan bread - it was a winner!

There's nothing like your son going up four sizes on school-shoe-shopping-day to make you feel like you haven't been paying attention!
