How are you supporting your team to understand professional boundaries?

Under NQA2 – Children’s Health and Safety, clear professional boundaries help educators create safe, respectful and supportive environments for every child.

Take a moment to reflect:
✔️ Are professional boundaries regularly discussed as a team?
✔️ Do educators feel confident identifying appropriate practices and interactions?
✔️ Are child safety practices regularly reviewed and reflected upon?

Leadership Tip: Make child safety part of your ongoing conversations. Regular reflection, auditing and team discussions help build educator confidence and strengthen a positive child-safe culture.

💚 What role do children play in keeping their own environment safe? 💚

As we begin our September focus on Quality Area 2 Children’s Health and Safety, we’re starting with a fantastic example from Brady Bunch Early Learning Centre Sebastopol.

Each month, the service completes a Health and Safety Audit – but this is no longer just an adult responsibility. Children have become part of the process too!

Two children join the service’s Health and Safety Representative to complete their own child-led health and safety audit, equipped with their audit checklist, name tags and safety vests.

Together they walk through the service looking for things such as:
✅️ Trip hazards
✅️ Whether bathrooms and rooms are safe
✅️ Anything within the environment that may present a safety concern

But they’re not simply ticking boxes.The children discuss what makes something safe or unsafe and why. If they identify a concern, they speak with the educators in that room, explain what they have noticed and discuss how it could be made safer.
They even sign off on each room once their audit is complete!

We particularly love how the team is building continuity into the process. Each month, one child who has previously participated remains involved to support another child who is new to the role, allowing children to share their knowledge and learn from one another.

And their work is made visible through their own display in the service foyer.

This is such a practical example of moving beyond teaching children about safety to giving children an active role in identifying, discussing and contributing to safety within their own environment.

Does your service philosophy connect to the goals you are working towards?

💭 What if you could actually SEE children's thinking develop?

This week we're taking another look inside Chapter 2 of Holistic Documentation & Displays – Version 2 and exploring one of the practical co-planning strategies included in the resource The Mind Map Approach.

Mind maps can be a simple but powerful way to capture children's thinking.

Rather than asking children What do you want to do? educators can use an open-ended question, idea, experience or area of interest as a starting point and document the different directions children's thinking takes.

As children contribute, a mind map can capture:

✔️ Their ideas and existing knowledge
✔️ Questions they want to explore
✔️ Different perspectives and theories
✔️ Connections between children's thinking
✔️ Ideas for where the learning could go next

And the mind map doesn't have to be finished in one sitting.

Come back to it. Add to it. Question it. Revisit children's original thinking and see what has changed.

This is where a simple mind map can become much more than a collection of children's comments – it becomes part of an ongoing cycle of co-planning, investigation and reflection.

💭 What does your QIP look like to your families?

As we wrap up our August focus on Quality Area 7 – Governance and Leadership, we wanted to share a different way of bringing continuous improvement to life.

We love this “Our QIP in Action” wall created by the team at Brady Bunch Early Learning Centre Kawungan.

Rather than expecting families, children and educators to engage with a lengthy QIP document, the team has made their improvement journey visual.

Across the seven Quality Areas, the wall captures:

✔️ Real examples of practice
✔️ Children's voices and perspectives
✔️ Family feedback and “We Asked, You Said, We Did”
✔️ Community connections
✔️ Current areas of focus
✔️ Evidence of improvements happening in practice

They have also introduced a “Focus of the Month”, bringing one area of the QIP into greater focus and creating another opportunity for children, families and educators to understand and contribute to continuous improvement.

A great question to finish our QA7 month:

Does your emergency drill process include reflection and feedback? 🚨

At Play and Learn Bismark Street, emergency procedures extend beyond completing the drill. Children are given opportunities to reflect on their experience, with their comments documented alongside opportunities for feedback.

This provides valuable information to support the service when reviewing its emergency practices and identifying any areas for improvement.

Take a moment to reflect:

Are children’s experiences considered following a drill?
What did educators identify during the evaluation?
Are identified improvements documented and followed through?

Leadership Tip: Use each emergency drill evaluation to identify what worked well, what could be strengthened and what actions need to occur before the next drill.

NQA7 | Element 7.1.2 – Management systems & Element 7.2.1 – Continuous improvement

As we unpack NQA7 – Governance and Leadership this month, we are exploring how services can make their Quality Improvement Plan meaningful, visible and accessible to everyone.

Child’s World BP1 recently reflected on how they communicate their QIP to educators, children and families. Their existing QIP update report included every change made during the month, making it lengthy and sometimes overwhelming to navigate. Educators also shared that the term “QIP” could feel daunting and was not always easily connected to their everyday practice.

Following research, collaboration and consultation with the team, the service has renamed its QIP display:

✨ Our Journey of Improvement ✨

Rather than displaying every QIP update at once, the new display will focus on the service’s monthly Quality Improvement Project and clearly capture:

• What the service is exploring
• Feedback received from children, families and educators
• Actions taken
• Critical reflection and changes to practice
• Progress made
• Where the improvement journey will head next

Once a project is completed, the “Improvement in Action” documentation will be transferred into the corresponding Quality Area folder, creating an ongoing record of the service’s improvement journey while making room for the next project.

The team will also continue to gather feedback as the display evolves, ensuring it remains meaningful and responsive to their community.

This is a wonderful example of a QIP becoming more than a compliance document. It is being transformed into a living, collaborative record that helps educators and families understand how their voices and everyday practices contribute to continuous improvement.

Well done to Renee, Steph and the team at Child’s World BP1 for making continuous improvement inviting, understandable and visible! 👏

Is your QIP in action? Is it a working document that reflects what is actually happening within your service?

How are you capturing feedback, goals, critical reflection and continuous improvement?

A QIP should not be a document that sits on the shelf or only comes out for Assessment and Rating. It should be a living, working document that demonstrates your service’s ongoing journey of improvement.

How are you capturing:

* Feedback from children, families, educators and the community
* Your service strengths
* Areas identified for improvement
* Goals and priorities
* Actions being taken
* Critical reflection and changes to practice
* Progress and outcomes along the way

💭 How many ways are you giving children to influence the program?

Children’s voice doesn’t have to look the same every day – and it certainly doesn’t need to rely on one documentation method.
