Things we know about how learning happens:

- Adopting more efficient ways of building knowledge in long term memory leaves more time for students to practice applying knowledge to solve, tricky multi-part math problems and more open-ended math investigations.

- Math, like reading, is not an innate skill. Mastery requires careful instruction, effortful learning, and lots of practice.

- Repetitive practice should not be dismissed as pointless 'rote learning' or 'drill and kill'. Mastering most hard things requires practice, as any budding student athlete or musical performer can attest. Math is no different.

- Knowledge doesn't stick to long term memory without frequent recall.

Extracted from the presentation by Allan Dougan, CEO of Australian Associations of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT), Speaker at KAO Conference 2026, Melbourne.
