🌱 What Have Our Educators Been Learning?
Through our Early Childhood Capacity Building Partnership with Spear & Arrow Therapeutic, our educators are continuing to build their knowledge, confidence and practical skills to support the children in our preschool community.
This month, our focus has been on regulation, dysregulation and co-regulation.
We have been exploring what happens in a child’s brain and body when emotions become big. This included learning about the “upstairs” and “downstairs” brain, and why thinking, reasoning, problem-solving and learning can become much harder when a child’s nervous system is responding to stress.
One of the key messages from our learning has been:
💬 “A dysregulated child is not giving you a hard time. They are having a hard time.”
Our educators have also been learning about the important role adults play in co-regulation. Before children can independently manage big emotions, they need repeated experiences of being supported by safe, responsive and regulated adults.
This means looking beyond the behaviour and asking:
💭 What might this child be communicating?
💭 What do they need from us right now?
We have explored practical ways educators can respond, including matching and acknowledging a child’s emotional experience, staying connected, and gradually supporting them to move towards regulation.
For us, this learning is about continuing to strengthen how we understand and respond to every child—particularly during the moments when they need us most.
We are excited to continue sharing what our educators are learning through our Early Childhood Capacity Building Partnership with Spear & Arrow Therapeutic, and how this learning continues to shape the way we support children’s wellbeing, relationships and emotional development at Trangie Preschool.
