The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

Toddler 1 celebrated NAIDOC Week by exploring natural ways to create art. Together, we mixed turmeric with water to make our own vibrant yellow paint before heading outdoors to gather natural resources to explore in place of paint brushes.

The children worked collaboratively to create a shared artwork, experimenting with different textures, marks and patterns. This experience encouraged creativity, teamwork and communication while introducing the children to the significance of using natural materials, a practice deeply connected to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their enduring connection to Country.

The children were invited to explore and trace a variety of Aboriginal symbols through a hands-on sensory experience. Using their fingers and small tools, the children carefully recreated the symbols in the sand while referring to the visual prompts, encouraging them to slow down, observe and experiment with different lines and shapes.

As the children traced each symbol, educators engaged them in conversations about the meanings behind the symbols and the importance of Aboriginal storytelling and connection to Country. This open-ended experience supported fine motor development, hand-eye coordination and early mark-making skills, while fostering curiosity, respect and appreciation for Aboriginal cultures and traditions.

Kindergarten 1’s sensory tray, inspired by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, invited the children to explore colour, texture and conversation while fostering respect, curiosity and an appreciation for the world’s oldest continuing cultures. Through play, we create opportunities for children to build connections, celebrate diversity and develop a deeper understanding of the people, stories and traditions that have shaped our country.

Congratulations to Loree on an incredible 20 years of service with Goodstart Early Learning. Over the past two decades, Loree has supported, nurtured and inspired countless children, helping them build the confidence, skills and sense of belonging they need for a good start in life.
