The start of term has kicked off well! We're happy to see our returning students and meet our new learners.

Our Guitar Ensemble at one of our contract schools is looking to expand into new repertoire and I am excited to undertake arranging some of the Big Band musical pieces into three part guitar pieces!

A challenging and rewarding task ahead!

An incredible guitarist and musician has collected discarded instruments from roadside pickup. He will be donating the instruments to local schools.

What a great reminder to reuse and recycle before throwing away instruments that less fortunate facilities will greatly appreciate!

We've spent the holidays doing a few renovations at home.
We're now looking forward to starting off the New Year with new and existing students both privately and with the schools we work on-site with.

Last year, I'm proud to say I completed my Bachelor of Music via CQUniversity Australia in addition to refreshing Certificate 3 in Music Industry at TCTC at Heatley Secondary College RTO 30295 which I have been tutoring students in also.

I am going to set myself a few goals with my playing this year, to hone the skills that I've developed through my study and to continue to grow and add extended harmony and modal and chromatic scales into my every vocabulary.

2022 goals.
1. 5 jazz standard recorded + compose one original jazz tune.
2. Continue creating YouTube demonstrations for approved repertoire through initial to Level 8 (Diploma performance Level) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7OK4L2qXnPOp3eCMApk5kQ/playlists
Unfortunately, some videos have copyright claims against them... :(
3. Perform and edit guitar ensemble videos for my school base guitar ensemble to observe.
4. Learn, perform and publish 4 new Diploma level songs to continue alongside students through the same repertoire selections that are available for their own exams. Which include, AMEB, Trinity, Classical Guitar Corner, and AGME among others.

I look forward to helping you all with your own musical goals!

Congratulations to all students who have begun their school year! I am looking forward to returning to lessons from week two (next week)!

We've also taken in some students on other instruments by request at a beginner level.

We still focus on Guitar Lessons as our primary instrumental lessons and Music Theory.

First day of the Holiday Break!

I've got many musical plans for the period.

Including sharpening up with my sight reading and extended chords.

I'm also taking the plunge into beginner piano repertoire since I use it in class to explain music theory. I felt I should utilize the instrument more!

I'm looking forward to making music with friends and family and seeing what progress others make with their time off!

Thank you everyone for a great year (all things considered*)!

We're feeling truly blessed to have continued lessons when able and even had some private students opt for some online lessons in term 2!

We're officially off duty for the year, but will still be available by appointment and availability.

We hope to improve our online presence over the break via both our website and YouTube channel in order to provide additional resources for both our students and other interested parties.

I'm very proud to have continued my Bachelor of Music and come through strong in preparation for my final year in 2021 with CQUniversity Townsville.

We'd like to encourage all students and parents to continue practicing and playing the guitar over the holiday period to solidify the repertoire and technique we have developed over the year!

Thank you all!
I have truly felt your thanks and appreciation throughout the year, and via goodbyes over the past two weeks.

Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas!

A different way to visualize rhythm - John Varney 04/11/2020

RHYTHM: This is a very interesting video.

I have used a circular template to explain recurring chord progressions with some students in the past.

I've never seen this applied in this way before, and it is interesting to see how we can very closely relate cultural differences in music.

NOTE: For advanced students. Found online while I was looking for a great rhythm tutorial for young students.

Great to see TCTC getting some recognition. It offers some incredible courses that many of Townsville's local muso's and trainers have taken part in. I am happy to have been a student in the Cert 2 and 3 in Music / Audio Engineering as well as teaching the course for a term and am tutoring current students with their studies too.

It's always a great time getting in each week and sharing a space with other creative people I would have otherwise never met.

"I’m extremely proud, happy and excited to be representing Heatley Secondary College into the next round."

Congratulations to Bjarne Ohlin on winning the Regional VET Teacher or Trainer of the Year Award in the 2020 Queensland Training Awards. We wish him all the best for the upcoming State Awards (next Friday).

Within the TCTC at Heatley Secondary College RTO 30295, Bjarne leads 3 teachers and has delivered Certificate II and III in Music Industry training to more than 350 graduates since 2004. His work makes a valuable contribution for this community in a variety of creative industries.

With more than 40 years' experience in the music industry, including as a member of the ARIA Hall of Fame inductees Divinyls, Bjarne has found his greatest challenges and sense of fulfilment through teaching.

Congratulations also to Zac Walker for his achievement as a Regional Finalist in the Vocational Student of the Year category.
