The research and photography talent in the CSTFA blew us away this year! Here are some more of the fantastic entries we received under the Aquaculture and Animal Health Research Theme :
1- “Are you looking at me?” Coral trout broodstock at the Company One by Jan Strugnell
2- “Hey I don’t know either why I am golden!” Golden colouration in barramundi, Mainstream Aquaculture by Dean Jerry
3- “Knee-deep”: Collecting barramundi skin mucus samples for my PhD project on an aquaculture farm! by Varsha Balu
4- Reunited After Two Months of Being A(b)lone by Roy Barkan
5- Cascading Dye by Jessica Zacharuk
6- “You are what you eat” – Juvenile abalone (Haliotis midae) develop varying shell colouration depending on their diet, Seaweeds Gracilaria and Ulva produce red and blue respectively, while formulated feeds tend to produce a white shell. The shell at this age can therefore tell you a little about the diets consumed during weening, by Mark Cyrus

A very special mention to Nathan and Ken who additionally came 1st and 2nd in the CSE Art of Science competition with their photos.

Nate’s photo is called “”Small Lobster, Big Plans: Discovering the key to formulated feeds in ornate lobster aquaculture”
Ken’s photo shows “Research with Asparagopsis, a red seaweed containing a bioactive bromoform which inhibits the enzyme that causes methane formation in ruminant livestock such as cows. Methane is a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent that carbon dioxide and accounts for 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions.” The picture is of Asparagopsis shaped into a cow!

“This image is a representation created using three different macroalgae species: Ulva ohnoi (used for the presents and star), Caulerpa sp. (forming the tree), and Asparagopsis taxiformis (as the pompoms). The star and presents carefully cut out from Ulva sp. sheets. The photograph, also taken under a microscope at 2X magnification.”
