Australia has some amazing lizards and a few have grown in popularity as pets. In the right conditions they can show off their rewarding personalities.
Before you rush out to get your first reptile pet though it would be a mistake to think of them as less commitment than a dog or cat. They require special setups that create a habitat of good lighting and temperatures to flourish. Doing research, preparing an appropriate setup and understanding their diet and care needs are essential before purchasing any new pet.
Also they can live a surprisingly long time. So are you willing to commit to at least a decade of care for your new scaley friend?

Wild snakes can often be difficult to see due to their camouflage. They come in a wide range of patterns and colours.
Not so much for these retro flouro noodle snakes. How many can you sssssspot squiggling around in the image?

Good news for Numbats!

Western Australia’s mammal emblem, the numbat, has been downgraded from endangered to near threatened on the The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.

Perth Zoo Science Program Leader, Dr Harriet Mills, told Oliver Peterson on 102.5 ABC Radio Perth Breakfast that the zoo’s Numbat Breeding Program made a major contribution to the recovery of the numbat.

“The recovery is due to a few different factors, including things like predator control,” Dr Mills said.

“The control of foxes and cats that we do, that is really important for numbat conservation. But our breeding program has meant that we've been able to have animals available for translocation and for establishing new populations.”

"We are really thrilled. I think all of the staff, not only in Perth Zoo Science, which is our team who work with the numbats directly, but also the whole of the zoo is just really proud that we've been able to make this contribution."
