One of my favourite things about children is that nothing is ever quite as it seems. Their imagination is incredible ✨ Children think beyond what’s placed in front of them they’re little explorers, adventurers, and whoever they choose to be in that moment.

Toys and games don’t always have to be used the way they were intended, and today was a perfect example. Using magnetic sticks and balls, the children created their own game. Instead of building something with a set plan, they arranged the sticks like a minefield 😂 and rolled the magnetic balls through to see what would stick. How many sticks could they collect with one roll? Did it work better rolling fast or slow?

This simple idea led to so much investigative play experimenting, problem-solving, questioning, and sharing ideas. Proof that when children are given the freedom to explore, the learning naturally follows 💭🧲

🌿 New Bamboo Play in Action! 🦖

Today we introduced our new halved bamboo shoots to the play area and what a hit they were! The children wasted no time getting creative, transforming them into dino slides, ball runs, and even tunnels using cable reels.

This open-ended resource sparked imagination, problem-solving, and collaborative play. From rolling balls down the bamboo to creating dinosaur adventures, the possibilities were endless! 💡

These types of natural, loose parts support: ✨ STEM learning (gravity, motion, angles)
✨ Fine and gross motor skills
✨ Language and social development
✨ Creativity and cognitive flexibility

We love seeing the way children take simple resources and turn them into entire worlds! 💚

🪲 Bug Investigation Station 🔍

Our love for all things creepy crawly continues to grow, so we’ve created a Bug Investigation Station.

This exciting little setup invites the children to observe bugs up close using magnifying glasses and specially made observation sheets. The kids have been busy checking for wings, counting legs, and sketching the creatures, developing early science and inquiry skills. 🐛🕷️🐞

This space is all about hands-on learning, discovery, and lots of wonder and it’s safe to say the bugs are getting a lot of attention and love here at daycare! 💚

Honouring ANZAC Day at Miss Kirsty’s Family Daycare

At Miss Kirsty’s Family Daycare, we believe it’s important to help children begin to understand the significance of ANZAC Day in a way that is meaningful and respectful to their age and stage of development.

ANZAC Day is a time to remember and honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. It’s also an opportunity to introduce themes of gratitude, bravery, and community values that even our youngest learners can connect with.

This year, we focused on the role of camouflage and the part it plays in keeping our soldiers safe. Through hands-on learning and creative expression, the children made their own soldiers, painting their uniforms in shades of green and brown. We even added a touch of war paint to their faces, helping them explore how camouflage works to blend into different environments.

These activities open up gentle conversations about the past, the importance of peace, and showing appreciation for those who serve. Teaching children about ANZAC Day helps build empathy, understanding, and respect foundations for becoming kind and thoughtful members of our community.
