Why do we celebrate NAIDOC?
๐ค๐โค๏ธ ๐๐ค๐ฉต
At NRL Cowboys House we come together on our NAIDOC & Family Day to recognise the communities that tie to our students, their culture, honour, history and customs.
This year's NAIDOC Theme, 50 Years of Deadly, encourages us to look at NAIDOC Weekโs history and pay tribute to the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Saturdayโs event was a spectacular celebration of our student communities coming together, joining in festivities grounded by culture, strengthened by community pride and propelled by the next generation.
Hear from our NRL Cowboys House General Manager, Rochelle Jones, as she explores what this occasion means for our students. ๐ฅ

One moment, a generation of memories.
At the 2026 NRL Indigenous Round, North Queensland Toyota Cowboys co-captain Reuben Cotter handed over one of 25 cultural necklaces created by students at NRL Cowboys House to the team.
Across the two weeks of the official Indigenous Rounds, our students created 100 handmade cultural necklaces, with 25 gifted to each of the NRL and NRLW teams our club played.
The journey began with the Year 9 and 10 girls, who learnt to make beads by hand through the Houseโs Culture and Arts program. They then helped prepare materials for students across the House, giving every young person the opportunity to create their own unique necklace.
Students made personal choices about their bead colours and designs, as well as what they painted on their seed pendants. These choices made each necklace unique and gave students a meaningful way to express their creativity, identity and connection to culture.
When Reuben presented one of those necklaces, its threads reached from the House to the national stage. What began as a hands-on cultural activity became a proud expression of the students behind it, carrying their stories into one of rugby leagueโs most significant celebrations of Indigenous culture.
That journey reflects why Culture and Arts holds such an important place at NRL Cowboys House. It gives students the space to discover their talents, deepen their connection to culture and express who they are in ways that feel personal and meaningful.
May the stories, culture and creativity represented in these necklaces continue to connect people, celebrate identity and create memories for generations to come.
