Celebrating 50 Years of NAIDOC

Today is Mabo Day, a day when we remember the courage and commitment of Eddie Mabo and his wife, Bonita, in challenging the principle of terra nullius (empty land belonging to nobody), which allowed British colonists to take land without agreement or payment. Locals to both Mer Island in the Torres Strait and to Townsville, Eddie and Bonita were also dedicated to supporting education for all children, with Bonita co-founding the first Black Community School in Australia, where she worked as a teacher-aide. Their legal win remains a significant moment in Australian history, resulting in the recognition of Indigenous custodianship over their traditional land. In 2013, Bonita was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to human rights.

It’s a fact: reading to children every day has a significant positive effect on their overall cognitive skills later in life. Through a book, a child can travel across distance and time to learn about people, places, and events. Bedtime is traditionally a great time for reading as it helps settle children into rest, and plants ideas for them to think about as they drift off to sleep. If the nightly routine doesn’t allow time for reading, consider making it a priority just for SOME nights, eg weekends, or on nights that don’t have extra curricular activities. Reading to children:

▪️ Brings you close to them. Both physically and emotionally.
▪️ Helps develop empathy. When we read a book, we become the character; see things from their perspective and identify with how they are feeling. It can help children to understand a wider variety of emotions and behaviours, as well as opens up social concepts of tolerance, acceptance, and morality.
▪️ Builds vocabulary, which in turn, provides them with more words to express themselves.
▪️ Boosts concentration.
▪️ Promotes creativity and imagination.
▪️ Assists with holistic cognitive development, such as how we perceive and make meaning of things, how we predict, problem-solve, and process information.
▪️ And of course, it fosters literary skills. Children begin to notice that we read from left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and an end. It develops an appreciation for literature.

The cooler months are approaching, and it's time to start preparing little ones to stay healthy. Here are our top tips:

✅ Wash hands often, especially after coming home from public places like shops or playgrounds
✅ Show children how to blow their own nose - make it fun!
✅ Catch coughs and sneezes in elbows
✅ Keep home if feeling unwell
✅ Book a routine family check-up with your GP

These small steps make a big difference. By working together, we can help keep our children feeling well, learning, and enjoying every day through winter.

Today we pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and spirit of Australian and New Zealand service men and women, both past and present.

May we always remember their bravery, their service, and the freedoms we enjoy because of them.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

We hope that you and your families are safe and have remained unaffected by the recent weather disaster in Townsville.

Unfortunately, the Headstart Lady Gowrie Kindergarten – Currajong building sustained some damage that will require repairs.

During this time, the children from Currajong will joining our Kindergarten service at the Lady Gowrie Headstart Kindergarten in Vincent. Rest assured, the Currajong staff will also be joining the team at the Vincent service to ensure a smooth transition and continued support for your children.
