Do you live in NSW, ACT, VIC, SA or TAS? If so, i’s that time of year again! DAYLIGHT SAVINGS starts this Sunday!

Follow for sleep tips and don’t forget to save this post for future reference.

On Sunday 1 October at 3.00am, it will be time for NSW, ACT, VIC, SA and TAS to adjust their clocks 1 hour ahead.

It can take your little ones body clock around a week or so to adjust to a new routine - consistency is key here.

There are 3 different options that you can do when adjusting to daylight savings time.

Option 1: Slow and steady approach
Adjust your routine by 10 minutes every day in the week leading up

Option 2: Progressive change
Adjust your routine by 15 minutes every second day in the week leading up

Option 3: Sudden change
Adjust your routine by 1 hour on Sunday October 1

If you are going with option 1 or 2, you need to start this transition this week :)

There’s no right or wrong option - it comes down to personal preference and what is going to be best fit for your little humans.

Which option will you be choosing?
Option 1 💚
Option 2 🧡
Option 3 ❤️

Nap Transitions

SAVE THIS POST FOR LATER - IT’LL COME IN HANDY!

As your little one grows, their biological sleep needs change, which means they will need more awake time and less day time sleep. This is when we going through nap transitions - transitioning from 3 to 2 naps, 2 to 1 naps and 1 to 0 nap.

Every child is different, so use this information as a guide, as these are the common ages for nap transitions to occur. Some children will drop naps earlier or later and it is dependent on your child’s individual sleep needs.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3 to 2 naps⭐️⭐️
Somewhere between 7 to 9 months old, babies will drop their short power nap in the afternoon (between 4.00pm-5.00pm) and just have a morning and lunch nap. Some babies can even drop this nap around 6.5 months old.

⭐️⭐️2 to 1 naps⭐️
Somewhere between 15 to 18 months old, toddlers will drop their morning nap and just have a long and restorative lunch time nap.

⭐️1 to 0 nap
Somewhere between 2.5 to 4 years old, the long restorative lunch time nap will reduce in duration and gradually disappear completely, meaning they won’t have any day time naps anymore. Even though they won’t nap, it’s still a nice idea to plan to have some quiet time in the middle of the day.

The following signs may indicate that your child might need to drop a nap:
💫They are resisting the nap
💫Their naps are getting shorter
💫They are taking a long time to fall asleep
💫Their bedtime is getting later
💫They have started waking early in the morning
💫They have started waking overnight

If your little one has been doing a few of these things for a week or so, you may need to look at dropping a nap.

Are you in the middle of trying to drop a nap at the moment? Which one?

💤Stomach Sleeping💤

You’ve just put your baby down for their nap or at bedtime and next minute… They’re on their stomach! Or they are showing signs of trying to roll!

What should you do when you find your baby sleeping on their stomach? Do you need to reposition your baby or can you leave them on their stomach?

Babies should always be put on their back when being placed in their cot/bassinet to sleep.

Babies normally start to show signs of rolling when they are around 4 to 6 months old, so this is the time to expect your baby to roll.

Do you need to reposition your baby if you find that they have rolled over in their sleep or are showing signs of rolling?

If your baby can do all of these things, they can remain in the sleep position that they choose, including their tummy if they:
🌙Can roll from back to stomach
🌙Can roll from stomach to back
🌙Has good neck control

It’s also important to note that when your baby starts to roll, it is important that they are:
🌙Transition from a swaddle to sleeping bag/sleep suit with their arms out
🌙Transition from a bassinet to a cot, as it’s unsafe to remain in the bassinet when they show signs of rolling

It’s really important that their cot is free from blankets, loose sheets, toys, pillows, cot bumpers etc, as these are a suffocation & entrapment risk. Be SIDS safe.

Your baby may become upset when they roll over in their sleep, especially if they are unable to roll onto their back independently.

You can support them to master this new skill by practicing rolling from their back to stomach & stomach to back during their awake windows throughout the day.

Has your little one started to roll?

has recommendations for Bedtime Routines

Babies, toddlers, children and most adults thrive on routine and the predictability of each day, as it sets the scene of what is going to happen next.

Bedtime routines are really important to have before settling your little one to sleep, as this can help make the settling process easier, helps with separation anxiety and makes the whole process a lot smoother.

You can implement a solid bedtime routine from birth and as they grow up.

A good bedtime routine should be calming, relaxing and preparing your little one for sleep. There’s no right or wrong way to do it, it comes down to what works best for your family.

An example of a bedtime routine could include:
💤Having dinner/milk
💤Having a nice bath or shower
💤Brushing their hair and teeth
💤Going into their sleep space, nice dim lights
💤Moisturise and massage
💤Dressing your little one for bed
💤Read a few books together
💤White noise machine on
💤Cuddles
💤Gently place your little one into their bassinet, cot or bed
💤Say goodnight

What’s your bedtime routine with your little one? I’d love to hear what your night routine looks like.

After being at home raising Jamie for the last 2.5 years, tomorrow I will be heading back into my education career. I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to watch Jamie grow into the beautiful little boy that he is.

Not only am I a Sleep Consultant (Jamie was my inspiration), I am also a Primary School Teacher with several years of experience.

When we found out that we were posting to Townsville for my hubby’s work for 2023, I started to keep an eye on potential positions. I wasn’t going to just take any job, it had to be the right fit.

I looked into relief teaching, as this would give me the flexibility and work life balance. I applied for a Primary Science Specialist Position and I got it!

I’ll be teaching 3 days a week, Jamie will attend day care for those 3 days and we’ll still be able to spend 4 days together. It’s the perfect balance for our family and lifestyle.

Had I not found a daycare that is a really great fit for him and educators who really care about the children in their care, this would’ve been a much harder decision.

I will still be working with families to improve their little ones sleep, my hours and availability has just just slightly

I’d love to know, what are your top tips for parents returning to work? Share below ⬇️

Goodbye Wagga!

We are officially driving out of Wagga this weekend and will spend just over 1 week travelling to our new destination…

We were meant to be in Wagga until the end of 2023, however Hubby has been promoted earlier than expected (I’m so incredibly proud of him) and we’re being posted to our new location.

This will be our second move in just under 12 months, but that’s ADF life!

I have worked with many beautiful families local to Wagga and it has been so amazing connecting with other Mums, who I still keep in touch with today.

I am so thankful that I work with families virtually all across Australia, from rural locations to cities, as well as clients overseas.

We’re ready for our next adventure… in Townsville QLD!

Wish us luck driving 3,000km with our 2.5 year old toddler 😅😂🤣

Do you want to be kept updated with how we manage Jamie’s routine and sleep on the road? Drop an emoji below ⬇️

Should you ditch the dummy?

If you have a newborn baby, dummies can be incredibly soothing and can help calm babies. Sucking activates the calming reflex, which allows babies to settle and sleep.

Dummies can help babies that suffer from reflux.

From around 3 months old, dummies can become a strong sleep association and this is when they can start causing issues with sleep. Babies can often start waking mid sleep cycle or at the end of a sleep cycle, looking for their dummy to be replaced. Having these frequent unsettled wakes can cause babies to have poor quality sleep and is likely to continue
to happen.

If you are noticing frequent wakes whenever the dummy falls out or you are having to replace the dummy in the middle or at the end of a sleep cycle, I recommend ditching the dummy.

You can ditch the dummy cold turkey before 8 months old, as this is when it can become a deep root sleep association and strong attachment and it will only take a few days for your little one to adjust.

8+ months old
I recommend teaching your little one how to find and replace their dummy independently. You can teach your baby how to do this quite quickly if you practice it often.

What do you think about the dummy?
Do you use a dummy for your little one?
Will you be implementing a dummy?
Keeping the dummy?
Ditching the dummy?

💜💜Premature Babies💜💜

Babies that are born before 37 weeks, are considered Premature Babies 💜

I have worked with many clients with ex 23 weekers through to 36 weekers and each of these experiences have been unique 💜

Having a premature baby can be quite overwhelming for parents, for multiple reasons, and we have to focus on ACTUAL age for some things but CORRECTED age for others 💜

So what’s the deal with premature babies and sleep?

This can be a tricky one to answer, as it totally depends on how premature your baby was 💜

I always recommend going by their corrected age until around 6 months old, then you can adjust and go by their actual age.

If your baby was born very prematurely/a micro prem, I would normally recommend going by their corrected age until closer to when they transition from 2 naps to 1 nap (which occurs somewhere between 15 to 18 months old) 💜

It may take a little while to find the right routine for your baby, as every baby and child is different 💜

If your baby was born prematurely, please reach out if you have any questions about their sleep or routine, I’d love to help your little one get onto a routine that suits them 💜

This is a topic very close to my heart 💜
