What a fantastic Friday afternoon at the Rugby Long Lunch celebrating everything that makes Downlands Rugby and Rugby 7s so special.

A highlight of the event was hearing from our 1st XV Captains and 1st VII Captains, who spoke passionately about their journeys through the program. Their reflections on the values, opportunities, friendships, and lessons gained through Downlands Rugby were a powerful reminder of the impact our program has on young people both on and off the field.

We were also privileged to welcome Marika Koroibete, who shared his incredible story. From his early life in Fiji to representing his country in Rugby League and wearing the Wallabies jersey in Rugby Union, Marika spoke openly about the challenges, sacrifices, and memorable moments that shaped his career. His humility, resilience, and passion for the game left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.

To top it all off, Marika joined us on Saturday to support our Downlands teams, cheering from the sideline and taking the time to connect with players, coaches, and families throughout the day.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the Downlands Rugby Long Lunch such a memorable celebration of the rich tradition and bright future of Downlands Rugby.

Congratulations to Downlands First VII Co-Captain Lanelle on her selection in the Queensland Reds Women's squad for the Santos Festival of Rugby in Roma on September 19! Anyone who had the privilege of watching Lanelle lead her team during the Selena Worsley Cup this weekend will know just how well-deserved this honour is. What an historic day for Downlands College Girls Rugby!

For the first time ever, the Under 14, Under 16 and 1st VII teams competed in a three-game Selena Worsley Cup series, and our girls rose to the occasion in outstanding fashion.

Downlands won all three age groups, with the Under 14s and Under 16s each recording two wins and a draw, while our 1st VII secured a memorable victory on the Main Oval to help claim the Selena Worsley Cup series 2 games to 1.

The level of skill, determination, teamwork and pride displayed across the day was exceptional. From our youngest players to our senior representatives, every team showcased the bright future of Girls Rugby at Downlands.

Making the occasion even more special was the presence of Selena Worsley herself, who presented the trophy and spent the day cheering on every Downlands team. Her support and passion for the game inspired our players and added to an unforgettable day for our College community.

With such a dominant performance across all age groups, we are incredibly excited about the future of Girls Rugby at Downlands.

Congratulations to all players, coaches, staff and families who contributed to this historic achievement.

What an extraordinary day!

A heartfelt thank you to our friends, families, past students, and community members who came out to cheer on our teams. We also extend our gratitude to Toowoomba Grammar School and The Glennie School for bringing such outstanding competition to the field.

A huge thank you to Marika Koroibete for presenting our First XV jerseys today ahead of the annual O'Callaghan Cup fixture.

It was a privilege and honour to hear from a true Wallabies legend. Marika shared inspiring stories from his journey, speaking about the dedication, resilience, humility and hard work that have helped shape his remarkable career. His words provided invaluable advice for our young men as they prepare to represent the College and pursue their own ambitions both on and off the field.

Born in Fiji, Marika Koroibete rose to prominence through rugby league before making a successful transition to rugby union. A Wallabies representative since 2017, he has earned more than 60 Test caps, won the prestigious John Eales Medal as Australia's player of the year, and is widely regarded as one of the best wingers in world rugby. His journey from a remote village in Fiji to the international stage is a powerful example of what can be achieved through perseverance and commitment.

Thank you, Marika, for taking the time to invest in our students and for reminding them that success is built on character, discipline and effort. We wish you and your family all the very best and look forward to cheering on our First XV as they proudly wear their jerseys in this year's O'Callaghan Cup clash.

This Saturday, the Selena Worsley Cup and O’Callaghan Cup will once again showcase one of the great traditions of Downlands rugby. 💙❤️

We're proud to introduce our Selena Worsley Cup team as they prepare to take on The Glennie School in a match that celebrates the strength, skill and continued growth of girls' rugby.

Named in honour of Wallaroos great and Downlands past student Selena Tranter (née Worsley), the Cup represents excellence, leadership and a passion for the game.

Ahead of this Saturday's O'Callaghan Cup and Selena Worsley Cup, today's Secondary School Assembly was filled with pride, tradition and plenty of Downlands spirit.

Our rugby players were officially presented with their jerseys, marking an important milestone as they prepare to represent the College on one of the biggest days on our sporting calendar. The blessing of the boots served as a special reminder of the values, commitment and camaraderie that unite our teams.

Following the presentation, our players made their way through a guard of honour formed by Secondary School students before the entire school came together for a spirited rally, showing their support ahead of the weekend's matches.

We wish all our rugby teams the very best as they take to the field this Saturday. Go Downlands! ❤️💙
