Belinda Tigell Music Music page for Belinda Tigell, a Toowoomba-based singer songwriter, and singing coach.

Belinda Tigell is a Toowoomba-based singer/songwriter, speaker and author. Her first solo was at age eight in a little hall outside of Toowoomba where she was invited back year after year. Her eclectic musical tastes have inspired her to explore different musical styles, rhythms, melodies and vocal techniques in her songwriting. Belinda’s vocal training has included classical, contemporary and jaz

z, and her voice likened to that of Kate Bush and Joan Baez. Her ability to weave and create stories with her songs has led Belinda to become regarded as somewhat of a wordsmith, with many commenting on her impacting and intricate lyrics. In late 2014 Belinda released her debut album of original songs, titled "Jubilee", an album of inspirational tunes with a mix of pop, folk, easy listening flavours. Belinda also offers voice lessons and vocal coaching for those aspiring to develop in their vocal skills, performance and voice health, or for those wanting to do a bit of singing for fun.

👏👏👏 Great question!

I love the fact that you want to encourage your little one's voice and enjoyment of music and singing!

For most young children (0-6 years old) 1-on-1 technical singing lessons may be a little premature (although there can be exceptions).

(BTW: I am approaching this question with my voice teaching hat on, as well as my degree in primary school teaching who holds a special qualification in early education - ie children 0-8 y.o.)

Group sessions can be invaluable in this very young age group.

Singing and exploring rhythm, rhyme, beat, timing and musicality in group settings can be a brilliant way to start your young child to music-making.

These contexts foster fun and engagement with music and musical concepts in ways that are less intensive, and more cooperative, and which children find very encouraging and motivational.

From there and as a child grows, decisions can be made about where and how to funnel any particular interest or natural talent a child may have where you might like to invest in 1-on-1 lessons for singing or an instrument.

Check out what is available in your local area for either low cost or free.

And feel free to send in any other question you have on this, or any other singing-related topic.

Thanks for your interest! And thanks for encouraging your child's enjoyment of and development in music education.

Rehearsing our set in our mind - imagining how we look, move, say, interact, feel and sound - can be a powerful preparation technique.

An extra bonus?
It helps us manage our nerves.

The key is to make sure we're taking slow, deep breaths as we do it.

The practice of visualisation can also be applied to anything you might be preparing yourself for - a job interview, a difficult conversation, preparing to travel, etc.

If you're going to give this a try, or you found this interesting, give this post a 💛

and save it for later reference.

Send it to someone preparing to perform!

In your learning of new voice techniques and musical skill, remember to move.

Move with the music.

Be moved BY the music.

This will make a difference in how you sing.

We don't like to record ourselves often because the recording sounds different to how we hear ourselves and we are way too self-critical.

We may not be kind or fair on ourselves.

Think of recording yourself as an opportunity to dissect what is working and what isn't.

While the quality of the equipment we use will impact the quality and clarity of the recording itself, we don't need fancy programs and expensive equipment. Your phone's recording app is a good place to start.

The thing is that we can often miss what is and isn't working while we are midst of singing.

Why?

Because we are extremely busy doing soooo maaaannnny things! Thinking about so many things!

Listening back allows us to hear that perhaps you
* need to articulate a line more distinctly,
* open a vowel shape, or
* alter the dynamics (loudness/softness) between sections.

Yes, it can feel "cringe" to hear your voice outside of your body, but go with it.

You will find your learning and skill development will benefit.
