Yep 🙌🏻💕 there are lots of studies that confirm movement and brain function! It just makes sense!

More play, less desk time could help kids learn better, studies suggest Australian children spend more hours in formal school lessons than in any other country. Is it improving their education or just wearing them out?

Here are three simple reasons why I’m opposed to NAPLAN:

1️⃣It puts too much emphasis on standardized testing: NAPLAN's narrow focus on literacy and numeracy skills can lead to a culture of teaching to the test, and a narrow curriculum that does not allow for a well-rounded education.

2️⃣It creates unnecessary pressure and anxiety: NAPLAN can create high levels of pressure and anxiety for students, teachers, and schools. The pressure to achieve high scores can lead to a culture of competition and performance anxiety, which can negatively impact students' mental health and wellbeing. Let’s not forget it’s a “ranking” system, which is damaging to a child’s confidence.

3️⃣Unfair disadvantage: NAPLAN disadvantages students, particularly those with learning differences & disabilities…despite their potential and abilities, they may be unfairly labeled as “low performing”.

These are just 3 reasons why I’m opposed to it…but I definitely have more!

One Happy Sprout 🌱 - I have always said that the most important thing in my clinic is the child’s emotional and mental well-being!

Before they can learn, they need to feel safe, valued and supported. Creating a positive learning environment that prioritises this, is one of Sprouts highest business values. Often, I will close the book, offer an ear, suggest strategies and help clear that energy before learning begins.

Let’s remember that academic achievement is important, but it should never come at the expense of a child’s mental and emotional well-being.

Let’s have a quick chat about positive teaching.

For those who know me, know I have very very strong beliefs when it comes to how we teach/treat children.

I am a firm believer that how you treat your students has a profound impact on their output and engagement in class and outlook on themselves.

I believe that your energy (either positive or negative) will be matched by your students. If you are warm, kind, empathetic, understanding, fun, positive…you will get so much more output simply because they are….happy!

So let’s scrap the naming and shaming (named sight word levels on the walls, yelling results in front of the class…this just induces unnecessary stress), screaming (Just role models poor regulating skills) and all those other negative teaching practices, because we all know the impact this has on our students.

Be a kind human…that’s all!

HI 👋 NEW FOLLOWERS - being a new year (even though it’s February already 🤯) I thought I’d reintroduce myself to those who don’t know my story and how Sprouts came into existence!

My name is Amy and I am a passionate qualified primary teacher who got fed up not knowing how to teach children to read properly, especially after witnessing my eldest dyslexic son struggle in the system (not to mention the journey we had getting him that diagnosis…7 years 🤯)

In doing the extra study to become an accredited MSL practitioner, I have become even more passionate about helping families and children who have learning differences, get the literacy intervention they need and often miss at school. It breaks my heart daily to listen to their stories and hear the unnecessary hardships they face.

I see the biggest holes in our education system when it comes to literacy learning and the children I help are the ones who unfortunately slip through these.

My goal is to not only help these children but help educate parents in how they can advocate for their kids and help shed the light of the misconceptions of dyslexia.

So welcome to Sprouts Reading Clinic…& if you don’t like reels…maybe keep scrolling haha because I’m all about them 🤣!

Well Sprouts is looking for an enthusiastic educator to run our school readiness program hoping to begin again in Term 2.
