I recently had the pleasure of undertaking a day of Mental Health Training at Mader Group in their Hamilton office, Brisbane.
The group were all mechanics undertaking training in heavy machinery in preparation for Fly In-Fly Out (FIFO) work in the mining industry across Queensland and New South Wales.
The day which is incorporated into the training for each intake at Mader Group is always lots of fun. Although the topic is serious, it is broken up with stories, trivia questions and online quizzes in Blooket.
I am always encouraged and hope-filled after these days that the next generation of FIFO workers will be well-prepared, and willing to create a positive future for themselves.
The training has been specially designed by Step By Step Training to provide relevant knowledge and skills for these workers new to the challenges of FIFO work. It is based on a Western Australian Study undertaken by the Centre for Transformative Work Design.
Topics covered include the cases of poor Mental Health in FIFO work, spotting the signs of issues, including suicidal thoughts, and supporting the individual and their mates. Fatigue management, alcohol and substance use and abuse, and resilience skills are also included.
Keeping relationships together, budgeting and Goal Setting for the future are also explored.
The day has been structured to provide plenty of opportunity for discussion, films, activities, and opportunity to ask questions. Each participant is provided with a hard-copy workbook for the day, which they can take with them for future reference.
By undertaking this training Mader Group are ensuring not only ‘compliance’ but best practice for their staff. Proactive industry training such as this minimises the risk of litigation, especially given the new Psychosocial Code of Practice now mandated by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.

On a trip to Bunnings this weekend, we spotted a friendly cousin, so we just had to park next to them to say hello.... even Dufus couldn't resist a better look!

Aurizon and Millmerran Power Plant recently contracted me to assist them to support the staff to understand the WorkSafe Queensland Psychosocial Code of Conduct.
Both of these companies are seeking to be proactive rather than reactive in this space. The training was provided to all staff, and included exploration around Daniel Goleman's book on Emotional Intelligence.
Activities were planned to be interesting, relevant as well as practical to ensure participants left feeling somewhat better prepared in this space.
I used the 'Muppets' as an introductory tool to bring in some humour as well as to flag that people are much more complicated than Kermit the Frog, or Miss Piggy. Also, that we can all learn the key skills to be able to communicate effectively and work as a team.
Thank you to these companies for organising these events for the staff. Next time I'll use another theme to include humour.
Burke & Wills Hotel in Toowoomba was the venue for the Aurizon training and thank you to them for the facilities and lovely catering.
If you would like further information in this space, please do not hesitate to contact me Heather Smith at Step By Step Training.
