Business schools around the world are beginning to confront one of the quieter but potentially significant consequences of widespread AI adoption: a decline in students’ cognitive engagement and independent thinking.
In other words, as AI gets smarter, users get stupider. This makes the ability to think critically a much more valuable skill.
The evidence of AI-induced cognitive decline is mounting. A study published in the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education, based on analysis of data from 300 university students, revealed that AI dependency led to increased laziness, the spread of misinformation, a lower level of creativity, and reduced critical and independent thinking.

For decades, the MBA has promised personal and career transformation. In 2026, that transformation is no longer incremental. It is ambitious, multidimensional and often global.
MBA students are as impatient as ever and are not just looking to climb the corporate ladder. They are aiming for what many now call a “triple jump”: changing industry, geography and function in one move. That level of ambition is pushing business schools to rethink one of the most important, yet historically overlooked parts of the MBA experience, career coaching.
The traditional careers office was once largely transactional, focused on CV polishing, interview preparation and job postings. That model is no longer sufficient. Australian business schools are increasingly embedding personalised, high-touch coaching into the core of their MBA programs. They recognise that complex career pivots require more than access to recruiters. They require structured reflection, strategic positioning and sustained guidance.
Many of Australia’s top business schools are now integrating career support into their offerings.

As artificial intelligence becomes a fixture in businesses everywhere, the University of Sydney Business School has launched the MBA (Technology and Digital Strategy) designed to train leaders who don’t just use AI, but understand it, critique it, and help guide its responsible use across society.
The MBA (Technology and Digital Strategy) has welcomed its first cohort of students, with Professor Katina Michael recently commencing as Program Director.
Professor Michael is adamant that leadership in emerging technology requires more than technical familiarity.
“Community values, organisational values, local or global challenges are embedded in every subject of the MBA,” she explains. “We teach responsible innovation, technology management, intelligent supply chains, sustainable futures, public interest technology, and AI ethics. It’s about learning how to navigate change.”
