🌱How did you celebrate National Science Week?

It’s been a BIG week of science at Tom Price SHS!

Our PCG Science Theme Quizzes saw students battle it out for daily glory:

Monday – Earth & Space: Year 10, Mr Appiah’s class
Tuesday – Biology: Year 7, Mrs Cawood’s class
Wednesday – Chemistry: Year 11, Mr Peake’s class
Thursday – Physics: Year 11, Mrs Robins’ class

During recess our students have had time to explore this year's theme 'Seeds of Science', making seed bombs, testing seed dispersal helicopters and making edible neutralisation sherbet.

TPAL also got in on the action with air-propelled cars, while our Year 8 Science classes joined a National Science Week livestream featuring Australia’s first fully qualified astronaut, Catherine Bennell-Pegg! 👩‍🚀🇦🇺

🌱 Science Week is coming to Tom Price SHS! 🌱

Next week we’re celebrating all things science, creativity and the amazing Pilbara environment with activities happening across the school!

📸 Whole-school Photo Competition: Capture the Pilbara — get creative and showcase the beauty, character and story of native Pilbara seeds.

Recess Activities: Jump into some hands-on science fun with activities exploring how science connects to our local environment and industry.

PCG Quizzes: Test your science knowledge with some Science Week trivia and see who can claim bragging rights!

Get involved, get curious and celebrate the science happening right here in the Pilbara!

Outdoor Education

As part of Outdoor Education, our Year 9/10 and Upper School students will be putting their survival skills into practice today by cooking on the firepit.

And, of course, s’mores and damper are on the menu! 🔥🍫

As part of their Survival Unit, students have been learning how to find and collect water, build shelters, and now how to safely make and maintain a fire.

The students have also built some amazing shelters down in the creek and are very proud of their work!

Follow the Dream Careers Camp 🖤💛❤️

What an action-packed week in Perth for our Follow the Dream students!

Monday ✈️
After arriving in Perth, we spent some time exploring before finishing off our travel day with bowling and Betty’s Burgers (yum! 🍔🎳).

Tuesday 🏙️🐬
A huge day exploring Perth and Fremantle! We visited the Fire Station Heritage Centre, toured Gumala’s headquarters, explored Fremantle and even spotted dolphins while spending some time at the beach. We then headed to Notre Dame for a campus tour and insight into university life. Students also got to use VR headsets to experience different degrees and careers, including aircraft engineering, nursing and agriculture. We finished the day with some shopping at Carousel and a movie night watching Spider-Man! 🍿

Wednesday 🎓⚽️
We attended the Follow the Dream Careers Expo, where students spoke with universities and a range of companies to learn about opportunities available both during and after high school. We then headed to Optus Stadium to watch Inter Milan vs AC Milan! ⚽️

Thursday 🧪🔎
We toured Curtin University, made extra special by our presenter being a Tom Price Senior High School graduate and Follow the Dream alumni! Our Year 9s participated in a physics workshop, while the Year 12s attended a sport business workshop before exploring the campus.

The afternoon put everyone’s teamwork to the test with a forensic escape room, where our “SWAT team” beat the average time and solved the crime! We continued the challenges at Hijinx Hotel before finishing with shopping at Karrinyup and plenty of Yo-Chi!

Friday 🌳🍦
After a yummy final breakfast, we explored Kings Park, grabbed some gelato and adventured around Elizabeth Quay before heading to the airport.

It has been an adventure-packed week full of new experiences, plenty of laughs and lots of opportunities to explore future career and tertiary study pathways. Our students are now on their way home - safe travels! ✈️

Year 7 Material Design:

Our Year 7 Material Design students are proudly showing off their fantastic final products!

Students followed the design process to design and create their very own nature-inspired resin necklaces. Along the way, they developed practical skills and knowledge in product management, materials, mould making, resin casting, and product assembly.

We are so proud of the creativity, skill and hard work they have demonstrated throughout the project!

A huge thank you to the wonderful team from the Shire of Ashburton for their ongoing support of our students!

Last week, thanks to their funding, the YEP Program visited our school to deliver engaging workshops for every student. The sessions covered important topics including navigating tricky situations online, protective behaviours, consent, and building healthy relationships.

To top off a fantastic week, the Shire team returned on Friday for their monthly Youth Pop-Up, treating all of our students to delicious fresh fruit salad bowls.

We are so grateful for the Shire of Ashburton's commitment to supporting the health, wellbeing, and education of our young people. Thank you for making such a positive difference in our school community!
