Our Annual Holi Celebrations 🌈

Holi, the beautiful festival of colours, is a joyful celebration of love, unity and the arrival of spring. At Discovery, we embrace opportunities like Holi to foster multicultural learning, spark creativity and encourage meaningful conversations about traditions from around the world.

Recently, our children explored Holi through a range of age-appropriate, play-based learning experiences. From vibrant colour exploration and creative art invitations to music, movement and shared stories, the day was filled with laughter, curiosity and connection.

Through these joyful moments, children not only experienced the excitement of colour and celebration but also developed a deeper appreciation for diversity and community.

Recently, Discovery received an unannounced compliance visit from the NSW Early Learning Commission, and we’re pleased to share that it was a positive and valuable experience, and one we welcome wholeheartedly.

The Authorised Officer spent time checking a wide range of our practices, from the documentation displayed in our foyer, staff Working With Children Check verifications, educator qualifications and training records, to first aid certifications, Responsible Person requirements, and our emergency and risk management procedures. They also reviewed our staffing ratios for the day (we exceeded requirements with 21 educators rostered when only 12 were needed!) and assessed the safety of our learning environment.

Visits like this are an important part of ensuring that early learning services remain safe, transparent, and accountable.

For our families, it offers reassurance that the systems supporting your children each day are strong and well monitored. For our team, it was an opportunity to demonstrate the high standards we uphold every day and the pride we take in the work we do.

Last year, the Orange Preschool children embarked on a child-led koala project that sparked creativity, learning, and meaningful conversations about our local environment.
That journey has now come full circle with something very special to share. Our centre is proud to be home to our very own koala sculpture from the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail in Port Macquarie.

Introducing Little Baril...

Little Baril was thoughtfully designed by the 2025 Orange Preschool children and beautifully painted by a local artist, inspired by the children’s artwork.
Little Baril, who's name in local Gathang language translates to "Little Orange," is now displayed in the foyer at Discovery for children and families to enjoy.
It stands as a reminder of the children’s learning, their connection to place, and the value of community collaboration.

Congratulations to our Educational Leader, Amanda, and Hastings Secondary College student, Ruby, who have graduated from the WINGS Mentoring program.
This program is a Regional Industry Education Partnership (RIEP) initiative that matches an Industry Mentor with a senior school student. The program aims to provide students with confidence, real world experience and industry exposure and increase employability skills whilst developing the leadership and mentoring skills of Industry Mentors. WINGS is funded by RIEP, Department of Education.

This week Discovery is joining in National Recycling Week and exploring how small changes can make a big difference for our planet. Across our rooms children are sorting materials, reusing everyday items creatively, and learning about caring for Country in sustainable ways. Together we are learning how to reduce, reuse, and recycle in fun hands-on ways that empower children to care for the environment around them.

We would love our families to get involved too – chat with your child about how your family recycles at home or bring in clean recyclables for our creative projects this week.

💛 Happy World Kindness Day! 💛

Our Orange Preschool Room children celebrated by spreading a little kindness (and coolness!) in our community today. They walked to nearby building sites and handed out icy poles to the builders to help them cool down on this warm day.

It was a beautiful reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. 💕

The children in the Green Preschool Room have been busy creating a small world version of our community, an exciting extension of their recent library dramatic play! Using boxes, containers, and photos of familiar places, they’re building spaces that reflect their everyday lives.

This evolving project helps children explore their place in the world, take on different roles, and connect with others. The places included are based on their own stories and suggestions, making it truly personal and meaningful.

We’ll keep adding and changing things throughout the month, guided by the children’s ideas and voices. Stay tuned for updates as our miniature community grows! 🏘️

This week we have been celebrating National Child Protection Week, a time to reflect on the importance of keeping children safe, supported, and connected.

To mark the occasion, the children brought in their favourite teddies for a Teddy Bear’s Picnic! Through this playful experience, educators have been having age-appropriate conversations about safety, trust, and the people who help keep us safe.

This year’s theme, “Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action,” reminds us that protecting children is everyone’s responsibility. Whether it’s at home, in the community, or here at Discovery, every small action helps build a safer world for children.
