Age of Empire 2 HD Academy

One year ago Mr.Bill Gates replied a fellow in his AMA(Ask Me Anything) on Reddit, that he would look into the development of new age of empire expansion civ. Few months ago, the Rise of Rajas expansion was released. The four new civilizations: the Burmese, Khmer, Malay and Vietnamese were added. In the following few weeks, we'll be studying the profile of these civilizations.

For those who are enjoying Friday night, we have changed the name to the Academy! We will focus on the study of the game and hope everyone in the group can take away something from us! Free love and beers

Preface : Starting the game !

I think most of the 80's 90's gamers would definitely remember Age of Empires which has been a sweet childhood memory to us all. Some people just come back for the game for nostalgic reasons, and might consider themselves " old/experienced player" ; while some people like myself come back purely because AOE 2 being the best Real Time Strategies at all time ( imo only, at least it's a legendary ! ) No matter which type of situation you are in, we would be amazed how many professionals out there playing like a thrilled movie, the arts of war and ultimate accuracy of resources management, the ability to hold themselves under pressure and changing situation...

This game is diffcult, I think most of the experienced players would agree. It takes a lot of effort to practice and correcting, many hours on watching professional gameplay records, even watching your own record, finding out the problems and improve. It is like learning a language, it takes time and persistency.

Fear not, we are here to help out and accelerate your performance and also provide an interactive platform for you guys to talk about the game, discuss the strategies and even sharing your pride !

Age of Empire 2 : Chapter 2: Counters

Winning a combat in Aoe 2 is all about countering! This article features all the counters between units in the original series and the expansions, with these fundamental knowledge of countering under your belt, you will be better off by making the right units to win the battle, increasing your winning percentage (make your Aoe CV looks good) and most importantly, prevents the loss of warriors and innocent civilians !!

Be aware that counter here means making tremendously huge damage to particular units, some units though not necessarily countering certain units, but still making pretty good damage, like mass gunpowder towards light cavalry/hussars ( but if you have pike man /halberdier against those that would always be better !)

In this list of counter, “-->” denotes counter.

General counter:

Archer --> Infantry (except Huskarl, Malian Champions and fully upgraded Berserk)

Gunpowder All kinds of Infantry

Skirmishers--> Archer, gunpowder (hand cannon), cavalry archer (also Korean wagon)
Archer cavalry --> Infantry except Huskarl, Malian champion

There you have it, the general counter list. After you have mastered these countering, that moment less than 1 second to think what you should build to counter the army, you already succeeded.
Although you now mastered the skills of countering, you have to do very good scouting in order to know what the enemy has. Next chapter we will talk about the skills of scouting and how you adapt to change made by enemy. (Mirror other’s gameplay might be good for the early stage of the game, but you may notice in the pro game, the winner is always the one who changes, innovates a new strategy, with a high level of improvisation is turning point of a boring game which never end at the chokepoint !
