MADE by the Opera House, or Multidisciplinary Australian Danish Exchange, is an extra-curricular program offered to Australian and Danish students of architecture, engineering and design (in the built environment) in their 2nd year of study or above. MADE by the Opera House was established in honour of the Opera House’s 40th Anniversary celebrations in October 2013 and will run for 10 years to the

50th Anniversary in 2023. Each year, five students from a NSW university and five students from a Danish tertiary institution will participate in the program in Denmark and Australia respectively. THE 6-WEEK PROGRAM:
Five students will be selected for each program. The students will form a multidisciplinary team to collaborate on a six-week project, developed by the MADE by the Opera House program partners and aligned with the Utzon Design Principles. THE ALUMNI:
Upon completion of the project, students will become part of the MADE by the Opera House Alumni group. By the Opera House’s 50th Anniversary in 2023, this one hundred-strong group will form a living legacy of MADE Alumni who will have a deep understanding of international design practice across disciplines and hemispheres. Today, the MADE Alumni is a community of 35 students and graduates - a professional network that collaborates, supports and mentors each other to become the next generation’s best leaders. Beyond the professional context, the alumni group is naturally evolving on a social level – friendships for life are being formed across Australia and Denmark. SCHOLARSHIP:
Each student is provided with the equivalent of AU$6,000 to cover international airfares, accommodation and living expenses during their visit. In 2017 and 2018, Airbnb is generously providing accommodation funds for the MADE students

DATES:
The annual program for the Australian students will take place in Copenhagen for six weeks in January-February. The program for the Danish students will take place in Sydney for six weeks in July-August.

Join Jan and Lin Utzon in conversation – as we journey through the legacy of their father, Jørn Utzon, the visionary architect of the Sydney Opera House. In a brief UNSW Sydney UTZON Lecture, Jan will examine the architectural brilliance of the building that has inspired a nation. This will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with both Jan and Lin – as they reflect on their memories of the design, the build and the dream their father brought to life.

On August 18 the final group of Danish MADE students presented the results of their 6 week MADE Program.
Hosted at Grimshaw architects and mentored by partners Steensen Varming and ARUP, Ditte Gyldendal Amby, Astrid Bjørn Dønnem, Christoffer Minor Brødsgaard, Isac Sebastian Lindberg and Marie Jul Scharff have collaborated on a design brief to transform the Opera House.
Their challenge asked them to reimagine the Sydney Opera House’s Central Passage to foster the Sydney Opera House’s transformation into Everyone’s House.

Hello everyone! It is such a pleasure to be the Danish MADE 2023 group. We are Ditte, Isac, Marie, Christoffer and Astrid. Right now, we are enjoying Can Lis, first hand experiencing Jørn Utzon's architectural principles and beauty. We have been relaxing and getting to know each other, discussing how we collaborate and our expectations for the whole program and experience. We are all very excited to see you soon Sydney! Varming

Congratulations to MADE by the Opera House 2022 Danish students for their excellent final presentation last Friday at Utzon Room!

This year our brief is ‘How can we celebrate the Opera House as a resilient and cultural beacon of light for a 24-hour City?’ and namely how the SOH Northern Broadwalk can be activated around three themes: Country centred Design; A 24-Hour City; and Futureproofing’. After 6 weeks of masterclasses, research, consultation with the First Nation, and support from our host firm Hayball, our Danish students worked together and delivered an amazing proposal with their great storytelling skills and a sense of humor.
