Language in nature 🍂🌧️🫒

Is there a better way than offering language to a child that's immersed in nature with the colours, movement, texture, smell and weight?

Encompassing the senses and EXPERIENCING the word.

Like, when you hear the word 'Mother', how do you feel? What happens in your body? Or, when you think of the word 'Lemon' what happens? What sensory impression is stirred?

I love that the children get to touch the flower of a strawberry before it becomes a strawberry, gets picked and eaten 🍓

I always strive to give a child a real experience of a word, best I can and where possible. (I can't bring a giraffe into my space so I offer a wooly, felt alternative!)

It's been that kind of day!

After collecting free mulch from a local school, I had a fabulous time rummaging through all sorts at Reviva Noosa to add to my outdoor loose parts play area.

I always enjoy a good treasure hunt there and left with a trolley full of goodies ranging from tyres, pot plants, outdoor hooks, planks of wood, pipes, bricks and I found myself staring at a birdcage for quite some time wondering if I need it for something? A plant?

Anyhoo, I left without the birdcage and then headed to Bunnings for soil, sugar cage mulch, flowers, seeds and a huge raised planter I'll get into this weekend.

Spring is springing up here on the Sunny Coast and I love gardening in this weather!

This week = strawberry slicing 🍓
It worked seamlessly, flowed really well and was highly engaging.

The tiny slicer worked so well with little hands and I could see the work of their fingers.

My only gripe is that I would like the entire set up to be red (chopping board, tray and so on) so that way, it's very clear to even the youngest of toddlers.

Always a work in progress!

Correct vocabulary, correct grammar. High engagement and focus from the toddlers!

These are our classified cards this week -

Cars: Hatchback, SUV, Truck, Station Wagon, Coupe, Food Truck, Ute, Van.

Types of Balls: Basketball, Cricket ball, Volleyball, Tennis ball, Softball, Soccer ball, Bowling ball, Football.

Reptiles of Australia: Bearded Dragon, Garden Skink, Monitor, Green Tree Snake, Frilled Neck Lizard, Gecko, Blue Tongued Lizard, Green Sea Turtle.

Mud, glorious mud 🚜

To me, it feels as though our garden has been a partial mud pit for the majority of the year!

But of course, the toddlers love it and immerse themselves in it daily - adding more water, finding worms, submerging construction vehicles and in particular, squelching their feet in it.

🌻 This week, we planted Sunflower seeds 🌻

The toddlers were very invested in this activity. We counted out the seeds as I dropped them in their hands. They used their spades to dig small holes and brush the soil to the side before dropping the seeds in and covering them with soil.

Then, they filled up their watering cans and poured water on them 💧

Now, we wait!

It definitely felt quite Spring like this week. Even my Jasmine is starting to bud. 🌸

'Mother Goose' - some of the oldest rhymes in the English language.

Offering toddlers the rich language, the rhythms, rhymes and cadence, it's such a pleasure, is so engaging and beneficial for them in a myriad of ways.

I borrowed this book from Noosa Libraries as I sing nursery rhymes to them every day and wanted to expand my repertoire.

At first glance, something like Mother Goose is not very compatible with a Montessori toddler environment. Toddlers are concrete learners, absorbing the world through their senses and environment so we are intentionally a reality based space (saving abstract concepts for over 6) BUT - the way in which it is delivered - with actions grounding them to the here and now as well as the many benefits for their exposure to rich literature, swings me in the direction of bringing it into their environment here. Plus, I pick and choose.

Like folklore and folktales I guess.

Today, I noticed they are more engaged when I sing to them with actions instead of reading the book and singing along. Today, they all joined in with the actions and asked me to repeat and repeat. So I did!

Last weekend, we went to the Shepherds Fair on Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran College.

It was such a great day out! Very well done.

I'm always on the lookout for good quality literature/ second hand books for my toddler classroom and serendipitously, I found this early math book on quantity and comparing sizes.

I had a particular toddler in mind who has been demonstrating repeated interest in these concepts.

Anyhoo, I got chatting with the lady and she gave it to me for free! How nice is that!?

So far, the children have asked me to read it more than once every day.
