Should I teach my preschool child letter sounds or letter names?
This is a question I’m often asked.

LETTER SOUNDS are essential to learning to read.
e.g. The word ‘cat’ can only be read if the three letter sounds ‘c-a-t’ are blended together.

LETTER NAMES are useful when talking about print.
e.g. The /k/ sound in the word ‘cat’ is spelt with the letter ‘c’

SHOULD I TEACH MY CHILD LETTER NAMES AND LETTER SOUNDS?
Possibly. It just depends on your child’s abilities and stage of learning.

For some children it can be confusing.
e.g. The first letter in the word cat is the letter ‘c’ pronounced ‘see’. When children say the letter ‘c’ the first sound they hear is /s/ which can be confusing as the basic code teaches the sound /s/ is spelt with the letter ‘s’!

Building reading skills at home starts with word play.

I want to share with you one important skill that assists pre-readers and beginning readers on their road to reading success.

It is perhaps something you are already doing.
You don’t need to use any resources.
It is a skill that helps young children develop an awareness of sounds and in-turn letters.

Most importantly, it helps children develop phonemic awareness- a crucial skill that has been widely documented by the Science of Reading researchers to be one of the best predictors of reading success.

All you need to do is to play a few fun word games with your child.

If you’re curious to know more, email [email protected].

You’ll receive a free one-page overview that explains the importance of this yet to be named early literacy skill and outlines quick, simple activities you can do at home with your little learner.

I have also listed some useful website links to free resources.

LOOK WHAT I RECEIVED!

Feeling like such a proud teacher!

'I am so excited that you are still continuing on with Lively Learning. I think there is nothing else out there like what you have created and I honestly believe that your program has put Paddy light years ahead of all the other preps at his school. We had parent-teacher interviews today and his teacher said she can’t believe how amazing he is at reading at this point in the year, he’s already automatically recognising words without having to sound everything out.'~ Emily July 2021

The video features yet another little learner from Lively Learning.

Not all students progress to reading books during participation in our program. However all children learn the skills relevant to their stage of learning which builds a strong foundation for when they are ready to read their first book. Such an exciting milestone.

Do you know what is the MOST IMPORTANT READING SKILL your pre-school child (3-5 years) needs to have prior to starting school?

Science of Reading Research states:
A child's level of phonemic awareness on entering school is widely held to be the strongest single determinant of the success that she or he will experience in learning to read — or, conversely, the likelihood that she or he will fail (Adams, 1990; Stanovich, 1986)

Our ‘Let’s Read and Write’ program will give your little learner (3-5 year old) a solid foundation in phonemic awareness plus loads more in early literacy.

Give your child the best start like so many others who have attended Lively Learning over the past 14 years.

Taught by a highly experienced reading teacher offering an individualised learning program for each child, small groups, lots of early literacy learning and loads of fun!
