JJ's High Performance

JJ's High Performance My name is Jack Grimes. I played 9 years at the Melbourne Football Club in the AFL, including three years as co-captain. Far bigger than it should be.

šŸ“ˆ Helping footballers at every level train smarter, perform better, and reach their peak.

Trusted by 3000+ players - be the next šŸ‘‡šŸ¼ While still playing, I opened my own personal training studio, where I coached everyone from first-timers to aspiring pro athletes. After my AFL career, I returned to local footy and it quickly became clear ju

st how big the gap is between local and elite levels when it comes to strength and conditioning. Too many players were working hard, but not seeing the results they deserved, not because of a lack of effort, but because that effort was going into the wrong areas. That’s when I set out to build something that would change the game for local-level footballers chasing their full potential. A platform that’s affordable, easy to use, and flexible enough to fit around school, work, or uni. I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best strength & conditioning coaches in the country. And I’ve leaned on those around me too, including my brother Dylan, who had a 13-year career at Richmond, earning three premierships and a Best & Fairest. Now, through the JJ’s app, I won’t just tell you what to do,
I’ll coach you through it.

Players often have no idea how to review their season. There’s one clear winner.

Season done? Don’t just start training.

Here’s what the stats say since the stand rule came in:

Teams are moving the ball from D50 to Inside 50 more effectively.

Kick-ins are reaching Inside 50 more often.

Uncontested marks have increased.

Stoppages and tackles have decreased.

And scoring has increased.

Exactly what the rule was designed to do.

Speed might not be your issue.

Some basic rules for this testšŸ‘‡šŸ¼

1ļøāƒ£ Every rep paused on the ground. No touch and go.
2ļøāƒ£ Full lockout at the top.
3ļøāƒ£ Only a few seconds between reps.
4ļøāƒ£ Every rep starts from the floor. No raised plates or blocks.
5ļøāƒ£ Once form breaks down, the test is done.

For footballers, getting stronger isn’t just about building muscle.

The goal is to improve how much force you can produce relative to your bodyweight, then learn to express that force quickly.

A 100kg player lifting 180kg = 1.8x bodyweight.
An 80kg player lifting 160kg = 2x bodyweight.

The lighter player lifts less, but is relatively stronger.

That matters for sprinting, jumping, changing direction and moving your body around the field.

But more strength isn’t automatically better forever.

If you’re already around 2x bodyweight or above on the trap bar, simply chasing bigger max-strength numbers becomes less important. And if you’re already above 2.3x BW, it probably shouldn’t be your main physical priority.

From there, the focus shifts towards expressing that strength faster through sprinting, jumping and explosive work.

Get strong. Then learn to use it fast.

2008 to 2016 was a special era.

Higher isn’t always better.

Don’t confuse freshening up with under-stimulating.
