Hey everyone,

Riley and I are both back from our adventures and the studio reopened yesterday!

We hope you had a fab week of making art at home. We're also looking forward to bringing inspiration from our travels into the studio & creating more art with your kids and teens this term.

Classes are running as normal until the end of term. Thanks for your flexibility over the last few weeks.

Check out how different each of these portraits & backgrounds are!

In this lesson we were teaching artists how to paint with watercolour and how to use a mirror to draw a portrait from observation. We discussed different face and eye shapes and artists used mirrors to notice details about their own faces, eyes, eyebrows, lips, noses, hair and other features.

And within this learning there was still so much room for individual style, choice, interpretation and exploration.

Love them all!

It’s been all about portraits for our youngest drawing AND mixed-media classes!

Artists have experimented with …

… “drawing” with a paint brush, drawing with pencil and drawing with black oil pastel on a painted background. All while using a mirror to study the details of their own face and draw what they see!

Which might sound easy for an adult, but is quite tricky and a fun challenge for young children.

Love watching their personalities, artistic style and interpretations shine through as they create these gorgeous portraits!

Our octopus collages were all about experimenting with painting an ocean - which colours to choose, how to create an underwater effect, how to blend them (without blending them too far and ending up with just one colour).

And then extending those blending skills further to paint an octopus with just a few analogous colours or tints of the one colour.

And then adding layers of oil pastel, metallic paint sticks, collage materials, glitter and more to finish their artwork any way that inspired them!

Even within the structure of learning new skills, there is so much room for experimentation, exploration and personal choice and interpretation.

Artists experimented with using pencil & blending sticks to create wood, brick and stone textures.

These gates and paths are just the beginning! Wait until you see how each artist put these techniques and skills together to create an artwork.

Three weeks into term and our studio is full of ideas, colour, curiosity and wonderful young artists.

Every week our students are learning new skills, trying different materials and discovering what they're capable of.

If you've been thinking about joining us this term, it's not too late. We'd love to welcome you into the studio.

Every artwork begins with the same thing.

A conversation.
An idea.
A question.

We teach techniques, demonstrate processes and encourage experimentation.
But we also know when to step back.
Because sometimes the best teaching happens when a student discovers the answer themselves.
That's where confidence grows.
