It’s handwriting! ✍️
It may sound odd, but handwriting is actually a key ingredient in building children’s literacy skills. Sadly, it is often undervalued, sped through, abandoned too quickly, or ignored entirely. Physical handwriting practice not only builds handwriting skills (like letter formation, speed, and legibility), but it also builds other literacy skills.
Intentionally and consistently working on handwriting helps students build:

🖋️Pattern recognition
🖋️Reading fluency
🖋️Writing fluency
🖋️Flow of thought from head to hand
It can be a challenge, but practicing handwriting supports the entire literacy system. Integrate daily or weekly handwriting practice with alphabet writing, Intentional Copywork, sharing ideas on sticky notes, or any kind of writing (think grocery lists, recipes, note taking, journaling, or to-do lists).
