HH&H - Healthy Hooves & Horsemanship

HH&H - Healthy Hooves & Horsemanship Whole horse holistic approach: barehoofcare, spinal mobility and posture techniques, horsemanship training & coaching.

Working with your horse to create positive experiences around hoofcare, help them find an improved functional way to move and be safe I am a Qualifed Equine Podiotherapist, studied under Aussie renowned Barefoot Blacksmith - Andrew Bowe and his wife Nikki. I spend my days out in the field helping those gain correct function of the hoof capsule. These include Pathological issues, ring bone, laminit

is, correcting imbalances and maintenance. This page is to help spread the word of professional hoofcare and that it is a whole horse protocol. As the horse owner, you own and are responsible of your horses feet, this means regular (usually around 4 week schedules) trimming. I can also teach you to maintain your own horses feet (less money spent over the long term!!) please ask me for more information. I use gentle horsemanship with kind handling methods to help my clients (the horses) feel safe and calm through their hoofcare experience. I service areas throughout Scenic Rim, the Gold Coast and some surrounds. Call me today and lets work together to helping your horse to a better future.

Charli

The reason why I got into hoofcare

He was lame in shoes, lame without.
He would abcess regularly but I was told theres nothing I can do and hes fine.

We tried different clip placements, double clips, nails in different parts of the shoe/hoofwall, tried different types of shoes and even went into cyteks.

The turning point was a farrier leaving telling me to drug him or use hobbles as he couldn't get 1 shoe back on. Charli would slightly move his foot as the hammer came down and the nail/shoe would move.
I cried in the paddock watching him be footsore walking around but no idea what to do next.

A fellow agistee suggested I call her trimmer and I thought why not, this is the last resort before putting Charli in a big paddock and retire.
2wk trims, radiographs, all 4 feet in boots, abcess care, boot washes, hand walking and questioning every step.
5 months of rehab and Charli was sound on grass. I was hooked to learn more about Equine Podiotherapy from that moment.
I did the weekend Barefoot Blacksmith course and paid my deposit for the Diploma as soon as I was home from that.

I thank Charli everyday I am out helping horses. I wish I could have done more for him through saddle fit, horsemanship, nutrition, body care but I learn more everyday to improve care for all horsed I care for now and in the future ❀️

I absolutely love when those that have had a tough time in their hoofcare, they choose to stay after even when the halter is off ❀️
This guy forgets who I am each month, he chooses to walk away and stick close to his herd mate. We have a beautiful way together of him allowing to have his voice, while I help him feel safe to say yes to allowing me to be closer. As soon as he smells me, he remembers, we stay in that soft moment for a moment and then the halter goes on.
Working with the horse far outweighs being quick and getting the job done.
Changing their hoofcare experience 1 foot at a time ✨️

How are you spending your Monday?

In SEQld we are getting a lot of rain so a day inside for me.
Instead of working under horses, I'm studying and making these cool photos πŸ˜€

Did you know that abcesses can find a way to push through the laminar and bar junction to make its escape, not just through the coronet band ...

In the first photo look for the 2 black spots that appeared during a trim today- 1 is in the bar and the other in the heel platform. The 2nd photo shows how I've resected down into the space a little to follow the track to see if I could find its original spot of exit to check health of the area and for ease of treatment to the space.

I believe these are abcess tracks as they appear slightly different to that of seedy toe. They had cleaner margins around the bacteria, the laminar showed sections where it had 'opened' and also had a yellow tinge. Usual seedy toe is identified with the black space that is more disorganised and the live bacteria is usually around and/or above the area.
Also knowing that this horse did show some lameness 6-7weeks ago and we found evidence of an abcess on his opposite hoof capsule on his previous trim cycle. Not sure what may have created the abcess and we may never find out why but we can treat the area and have a better understanding for next time 😊

As many of you may know, I love learning all about the horse and how we can help them have long term soundness through holistic methods.
I've been delving into how horses compensate and how they show it through their feet and body over the last 5 years and its taken me down the route into learning different bodywork modalities to be able to adjust and change the levels of compensation.
I'm so excited to be offering clients a 30min bodywork service that you can add to your horses hoofcare session. This is designed to help release tension, help them feel connected to their body and increase alignment and balance following their hoofcare, which flows on in to their movement.
Give them the gift of feeling good 😊

Happy Friday and long weekend πŸ˜€

Who's feeling a little like this precious girl and ready for the weekend?
I sure am after a big week, with one of the highest number of horses per day and per week 😳 new high of 16 in a day and 55 for the week. Lucky I love my job 😍🐴

I love learning about all aspects of the horse, from the ground up, inside out 😍.
Over the years I've completed certification in various modalities of body work, asked more questions on how we ride and how to do it and sat in many hoofcare webnairs to finesse and try different methods or follow changes in research.
The last 2 weeks I dived into learning more about The Masterson Method with a 2 day clinic. I loved it so much by the end of day 1, I was arranging to participate in the advanced 5 days a week later.
I have just landed home after the 5 days of immersive learning and what a journey. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows (literally getting a quick storm today πŸ˜†) but I feel I have shed some layers and stepped forward into a newer lighter self.
All the horsemanship hours and time spent around and under feet, education from the hours I have spent studying, I feel helped me have confidence to get straight into learning the how and why of the movements.
The ponies and horses we worked on all had positive changes, some were smaller or not as noticeable compared to the bigger responses others showed but you could feel the change through the movements 😍.
Small improvements create longer change ❀️
