“My child doesn’t act like that at home.”

Teachers hear this more often than you might think. And the parent may be completely right.

A child behaving differently at school doesn’t necessarily mean the teacher is wrong about what they’re seeing, just as behaving well at home doesn’t prove the child behaves exactly the same way everywhere else.

Home and school are completely different environments.

At home, a child might have the attention of one or two adults. At school, they may be sharing one teacher with 25 or 30 other students. They’re surrounded by friends, distractions, personalities, expectations, transitions, competition for attention, and plenty of opportunities to make choices they simply wouldn't encounter sitting at home.

Adults understand this instinctively about themselves. We don't behave exactly the same way with our boss, our friends, our parents, our partner, and a room full of strangers.

Why would we expect children to?

So when a teacher tells a parent about behavior they haven't witnessed themselves, the response shouldn't automatically be, “They don't do that at home.”

Maybe they don't.

But that doesn't mean they didn't do it at school.

The most productive response isn't deciding which adult must be wrong. It's recognizing that both adults may be seeing different sides of the same child and working together to understand why.

When a teacher describes behavior you've never seen at home, should your first instinct be to question the teacher or listen to what they're seeing?
