🌿 STEP UP: Playconomics at Science in the Swamp 2026! 🎮🔬

Last month we were delighted to be invited to Science in the Swamp at Centennial Park as part of National Science Week!

It was wonderful to see economic and financial literacy come to life through gameplay, decision-making and a little friendly competition 👏 🏆

🎮 Visitors had the opportunity to jump into Level 5 of the Playconomics video game, with the highest score reaching an impressive 228 points!

📊 Alongside Playconomics, our younger guests got to “play” with economics too, with a hugely popular Supply & Demand board game exploring prices, buying, selling and value.

It was fantastic watching everyone discover how value, prices and markets work - and adjust their decisions as the market evolved.

We especially loved our repeat visitors coming back throughout the day to see how the market had changed as more people joined in! 📈🙌

A big thank you to all the students, families and teachers who visited the UNSW Playconomics stall and to Science in the Swamp for having us! 💙

📅 What's Happening in Playconomics?

With Tournament 1 now complete and Tournament 2 underway, there's plenty happening in Playconomics during this month!

🧪 Science at the Swamp
Kids and their families have been able to experience Playconomics in action! Combining scientific discovery with economic decision-making in an engaging new scenarios.

🎮 Tournament 2 Continues
Students can continue building their economics and financial literacy while competing for cash prizes, medals, and certificates across school, state, country, and global leaderboards.

🌐 Website Updates
We're rolling out improvements to the Playconomics website this Thursday from 3pm AEST, including new resources and enhancements to make the experience even better for teachers and students.

📢 The STEP UP Playconomics Tournament 1 2026 is entering its final month, with approximately 4 weeks remaining!

Recently, the Playconomics team unveiled an exciting range of prizes available to participating students. Alongside cash prizes and medals for the Top 3 players globally, students can also compete for Top 3 positions within their country, state, and school.

The tournament provides a unique opportunity for students to apply economic concepts in a dynamic, multiplayer environment, developing skills in strategy, decision-making, market analysis, and resource management.

If your school hasn't joined yet, there's still time to get involved. Students enrolled in Australian and New Zealand secondary schools can still register and begin competing before the tournament concludes.

⛲ A powerful example of economics in action!

In Playconomics Level 8, students work together to build and maintain a public fountain that increases happiness for all players. Through voluntary contributions, participants have donated over $11,000 to support this shared resource, creating a practical lesson in public goods, incentives, and collective decision-making.

Since Tournament 1 launched, students have been applying economic concepts by predicting market movements, trading resources, analysing risk, and competing to maximise utility in a dynamic multiplayer environment.

Every choice matters! Through real gameplay, students experience key economic concepts - including supply and demand, market fluctuations, entrepreneurship, teamwork, risk management, and decision-making.

Recently, a number of our Senior School students participated in the Playconomics tournament. Partnered with UNSW, STEP UP, Playconomics encourages students to learn financial literacy and economic skills, and also provide students a glimpse into university education.
Playconomics gamifies economic and financial literacy, with students learning through gameplay and competing with peers from 150+ schools across Australia and New Zealand!
