Our friends at the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) have written a policy brief about three recent publications from the GCPS. One looks at increasing levels of HIV prevention coverage in the PrEP era, another looks at how HIV testing and prevention outcomes appear to be worse in areas with higher 'No' votes in the marriage equality survey, and the third considers trends in the ways that gay and bis*xual socialise with each other, and how this affects HIV education. Results from the Perth 2021 survey have been published! Key findings include the impact of COVID-19 on gay and bis*xual men in WA:
- 78% of PrEP users were taking it less often or had stopped taking PrEP because of COVID-19
- 19% had lost income or their job because of COVID-19
- 31% were having less s*x due to COVID-19

- 27% had lost income or their job because of COVID-19
- 60% were having less s*x
- 44% of PrEP users had stopped taking PrEP or were taking it less often because of COVID-19

Results from the Adelaide 2020 survey have been published! Key findings include the impact of COVID-19 on gay and bis*xual men in South Australia:
- PrEP use among HIV-negative participants increased to 23% in 2020
- However, due to COVID-19, 51% of participants reported having fewer s*xual partners, and 32% of PrEP users stopped taking PrEP or took it less often
- Recent HIV testing also fell to 62% in 2020

Results from the Queensland 2020 survey have been published! Key findings show the impact of COVID-19 on gay and bis*xual men in Queensland. They include:
- Due to COVID-19, 42% of participants reported having fewer s*xual partners and 34% of PrEP users stopped taking PrEP or took it less often
- That meant PrEP use among HIV-negative participants decreased to 21% in 2020
- However, the use of HIV treatment and sustaining an undetectable viral load remained stable among HIV-positive participants

Our friends at Aidsmap have written an explainer on our recent publication in the journal AIDS, using GCPS data. In it we show that PrEP became more commonly used than condoms for HIV prevention by gay and bi men in Australia in 2019. Although condom use has fallen, the combined use of condoms, PrEP and undetectable viral load means that more gay/bi men are protected from HIV, which has helped HIV infections fall.
