When children pick up a pair of scissors, ✂️ they awkwardly turn their hand upside down and the scissors fall from their fingers. Giving a simple verbal instruction that they can say out-load themselves will help them to keep their "thumb on top and elbow in".👍

Sadly, a toddler would come to kindy unwashed, dirty feet, dirty cloths. An Educator expressed "if we always clean their child then they will expect us to do it every time."
Educators first duty of care is to the child.
By cleaning the toddler you are not only caring for them, you are teaching them the difference of feeling clean to feeling unclean. You are unintentionally teaching them self help skills.
#1 - care for the child.

Giving children a simple to follow phrase they can say and repeat, can help them learn how to hold scissors.✂
When children start learning how to cut, they often turn their hand upside down and the scissors fall from their fingers.
Saying "Elbow in, Thumb on top" can help them visualise how they see their arm and hand.
This two handed action helps develop the ability to cross the midline in the brain through the imaginary vertical line between the two hands. The dominant hand controls the scissors while the second hand holds the paper.

A reaction passed down to us can be to "threaten first" when a child resist.
This is not acceptable practice as a professional Educator.
Skills develop with use. Habits formed over time can change when new useful skills become second nature.
In any situation our minds will "fall to our habits - before we rise to our knowledge". That's how our brains work. This is why practice is important.
TIP - Role play senario's with peers to strengthen your skills into natural habits that enhance your daily practice.

Great feedback on how "An Educator's Handbook " simply explains programming and relieved the readers anxiety on participating in the rooms planning.
