Excellent review: Quote "In conclusion, current evidence advocates that severe acidosis in fast-twitch fibres can contribute to force/power fatigue during intense human exercise."
That conclusion is highly likely relevant to intense equine exercise until it is demonstated as irrelevant.

The horse in question was galloped on a treadmill yesterday. How do I know that the gallop was at an intensity and duration that will increase the resistance to fatigue in its next race?

Feedback to a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer today after review of track training based on use of Orioneo technology. It commented on:
Quality of the warm up
Quality of the fast gallop - was it ideal at this stage.
HR recovery after the gallop
Plan for next week.

Yes, just 3 horses in this study, but it shows the potential for non-invasive, sensitive and accurate identification of "potentially catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries ".

Detecting fatigue of sport horses with biomechanical gait features using inertial sensors - PubMed
Detection of fatigue helps prevent injuries and optimize the performance of horses. Previous studies tried to determine fatigue using physiological parameters. However, measuring the physiological parameters, e.g., plasma lactate, is invasive and can be affected by different factors. In addition, th...

A link below provides information about scientific measurement of aerobic fitness in Thoroughbred racehorses and galloping sport horses. https://www.facebook.com/evansscience
Aerobic fitness depends on a horse's capacity to deliver oxygen to muscles via airways, lungs, blood, and on its heart function during maximal exercise.
The technique uses on-board technology to measure heart rates during and after track workouts. My technology of choice is supplied by Arioneo
www.training.arioneo.com/en/arioneo-home
The technology also checks for any abnormality of the heart rhythm during exercise and the recovery after exercise.
Why bother? In a large scale studies in several countries, racehorses with a far superior "Heart Index" performed well at top level. Horses with low Heart Index should be kept racing at sprint distances.
heart Index improves with design of ideal training methods.
This service is offered as an equine sport science consultancy, not as a veterinarian's service. Any abnormalities detected should be discussed with a veterinarian.
Happy to explain in more detail.

Bramlage: Racing And Training 2-Year-Olds Reduces Their Risk Of Injury – Here's Why - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report
Before most horse racing jurisdictions shut down across the country and threw the economic balance of the sport into question, the industry's biggest problem was its need to reduce racing and training fatalities. Veterinarians and scientists are still learning about the causes of catastrophic injuri...
