MEDITATION
A description of Mary Masselos’ work by artist and pupil Charles Kruppay
As I have mentioned, my current focus is using tone and improvised music as a tool for accessing fully conscious dream states. This technique has been developed by Mary Masselos who operates under the name of The Seven Tone Healing Method. Part of this method involves group meditation that starts a session with 1, 3 or 5 AUMS. These AUMS are dedicated to people/groups in need of healing or greater awareness and also spiritual beings who are asked to help facilitate the meditation. The vibrations of the AUMS are mentally pictured resonating out from the group until they encompass suburbs, cities, countries, the whole earth and finally out into the cosmos. This energy is then brought back down into the earthly sphere and assimilated individually, starting usually with the crown chakra and working down towards the base and concluding with establishing a connection to the earth below. Awareness of physical, emotional and/or spiritual discomfort and blockages is addressed by pointing to the region and creating a hand symbol for the current state. This is then crystallised in a tone which each member of the group is asked to sing. The tone has to be spontaneous and heard within before it is sung. Usually the facilitator will ask everyone for a nod of the head when they are ready to proceed. The resulting chord can be harmonious or discordant. Either is fine. The facilitator will then identify each tone and incorporate them into a melody that is improvised. Everyone is asked to be aware of all sensations and mental images that may arise during this improvisation. Each individual is asked to hold their tone for as long as they can though it is quite natural for the group to gradually harmonise. After the improvisation, the group is asked to share what transpired during the course of the meditation. This often includes the identification of a new symbol that encapsulates the transformation that occurred.
The philosophy behind this technique is influenced mainly by Jungian Psychology, the Indian mystic and musician Hazrat Inayat Khan, Anthroposophy and Theosophy. Mary has devoted a life time to the study of spiritual techniques and musical proficiency. This has included study at the music conservatorium, years of concert playing, the practise of various meditation techniques, transpersonal psychology studies and music therapy studies. The result is a synthesis of ancient and modern ideas into a very personalised and intuitive way of working with individuals and groups. The heart of the technique is in the recognition of the seven tones of the musical scale as being archetypes or spiritual beings. Each one reflects a profound aspect of the ideal human condition and points to the state of grace that can be achieved when the negative aspects of that ideal are transformed. The music that spontaneously arises in this type of meditation is deeply moving and very conducive to imagery. This imagery is often an accurate reflection of what is occurring on a deeper level within an individual (so long as there are no chronic psychic disturbances). The objective is to create a safe and positive space for that imagery to arise so that any negative aspects of the psyche/soul can be recognised and “brought into the light” of day consciousness. In this respect, such a technique becomes a path of transformation. The esoteric aspect of such a path lies in the creation of spiritual organs that are gradually developed allowing the individual’s consciousness to be expanded into the subconscious realm. This subconscious realm is the soul world or astral plane. The objective is to be aware of what is occurring on this level so that a further connection to the higher spiritual levels can be created. From an Anthroposophical perspective, humanity’s current stage of development requires the synthesis of rational and spiritual components of cognition in order to awaken a new type of spiritual perception. This ability will become more widespread as humanity continues to promote inner development that emphasises accompanying moral development.
