Just wrapped up an exciting Masterclass at the DigiMarCon - Digital Marketing, Media and Advertising Conferences & Exhibitions at Sentosa today, where we dived into the real marketing game. We kicked off by discussing the importance of balancing brand marketing with performance - because while performance marketing targets the 3% ready to buy, what about the other 97%? 🎉 AI Meets National Day: Celebrating 18 Years and Creating Music with AI and Memories in Singapore 🎉

As Singapore turns 59, I'm reminded it's been almost 18 years to the day since I packed up my life and moved to SG. Wow, 18 years! (I always tell everyone I moved here young! 😜).

I'm proud to call Singapore home, and I'm thrilled I made the effort to truly integrate and live like a local. If you ask the teams I have managed here they will tell you I'm local-lah not expat 😄! I don't live in a condo; I own an HDB maisonette, and I can tell you, it's the friendliest place I've ever lived. My neighbours are fantastic, and my kid has the "kampong" village upbringing with open doors at night and kids running up and down the corridors or playing in one of the houses. Everything is so convenient – hawker centre, vet downstairs, Sheng Siong supermarket a 2-minute walk away, wet market nearby and I'm right on the east coast – love my beach walks 🏖️.

My kid was born and bred here in SG. I'm Aussie, his dad is British. When you ask him where his family is from, he says, "Mummy is Australian, Daddy is British, Mei Mei (what he calls my helper, 'Big Sister') is Filipino, and I'm Singaporean." Now, he may not have the passport, but he's a PR and will be doing national service, and he is a proud Singaporean.

Last week, as I was prepping for my keynote at a Social Media conference in Penang, I was testing out some AI tools – Suno. Suno helps you create your own music. My kid often likes to see what mummy is playing around with, so he asked to co-create a song with me while I tested the platform. When asked what he wanted the song to be about – no surprise here – he responded with "National Day."

And wow, what a great job Suno did. Made it so easy to create a video with my own one-of-a-kind song. The lyrics are, in my opinion, true to the Singaporean culture and identity. So TURN YOUR SOUND RIGHT UP 🔊 and take a sneak peek into my "neighbourhood kampong and Singapore." Thanks, SG, for the 18 years, and here's to many more 🥂.

🎤 Final Wrap-Up of SocMedCon 2024 in Penang!

Hey everyone! As we wrap up an absolutely fantastic two-day conference, let’s dive into the thrilling highlights of our last day! Don't forget to turn on the sound to hear the awesome song we crowd-created at the end of the event!

Afternoon Kick-Off with April Yim: April wowed us with her session on "Reimagining Influencer Marketing." She dived into how influencers build not just connections but vibrant communities. The examples she shared were nothing short of inspirational – talk about wow moments!

Next Up, Edge-of-Your-Seat Insights with Lau Lik Sing: Lau had us all at the edge of our seats. He shared brilliant strategies on optimising conversions for both big established brands like Puma and start-up e-commerce businesses. Here are some juicy stats and tips from his talk:

🌟 For Established Brands: Social takes 50-60% with a focus on conversion from view content to purchase. Google ads follow at 30-40% targeting brand and exact strategies

🌟For Start-Ups: Social still reigns at 50-60%, with Google taking 40-50% focusing on generic and competitors.

Closing with a Bang 👏: And then, it was my turn to wrap up all the trends we discussed. From the rise of social commerce and the importance of podcasts to the ever-evolving landscape of voice, AI, and UGC. I also gave a live demo on "how to clone yourself" using HeyGen – perfect for those camera-shy moments or for banging out product videos like a pro.

And let’s not forget the fun with Suno where we created a unique song for the event. We went with a K-pop style and even threw in a saxophone – seriously, whoever thought of that was a genius! We typed in words like "beyond the clicks and likes," "influencers," and "SocMedCon," and let AI do the magic. Turn on sound to hear it! Script from ai still needs a bit of work, but it’s a work in progress 😊.

What an absolute blast these two days have been! A huge thanks to all the fabulous Neng Chiu Yan and the incredible team at MindZallera for organizing such a stellar event. As the Event Chair, I’m excited to share the mid-morning highlights in case you missed our earlier post.

🚀 Mid-Morning Highlights:
What a session we had with Kelvin Tay 🎙️and Afiq Kamarudin from Malaysia’s first independent Podcast Network! Kevin kicked things off by championing podcasts as a dual powerhouse for education and entertainment – or as I love to call it, "edu-tainment." He had us chuckling with his anecdote about a successful podcast dedicated entirely to pens. Yes, you heard it right (pun totally intended) – pens you write with!

Kelvin shared some eye-popping stats: between 2022 and 2023, Malaysia saw a 20% increase in unique live streaming listeners and an 18% bump in podcast consumption. Programmatic advertisers jumped on the bandwagon with a 16% increase in advertising on podcasts, while overall ad spend soared by a whopping 63%. On average, Malaysians consume three podcasts per week, raising the big question for brands: should you be investing in a podcast or at least advertising on the platform?

Here are Kelvin's top tips for diving into the podcast world:
Spotify is King: It’s the number one platform for podcast listeners. But remember, Spotify is the end destination. People usually discover podcasts through YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and other social channels.

Optimal Release Days: Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to release content, and this isn’t limited to podcasts. This is a golden rule for all types of content.

Kelvin and Afiq's insights were a masterclass in harnessing the power of podcasts for brand engagement.

Following this, we dived into a round table discussion on “Innovation in Marketing: Embracing New Technologies and Creative Approaches”. This lively exchange covered everything from the fairness of algorithms to showcasing their greatest and latest campaigns. One of the standout shares? The adorable “Thumb” mascot for True Protect, which had everyone talking!

June: Seoulful Encounters: Where Coffee, AI, and Disney Collide at DMS Korea 2024 ☕🤖✨

Seoul, you never cease to amaze me! Korea it was an absolute pleasure to return for the second time to the Digital Marketing Summit (DMS) in this vibrant city. Kudos to John Park (박세정) and the incredible DMS team for orchestrating such an outstanding event filled with rich content, inspiring speakers (Arvind Sethumadhavan, Martin Musiol, Devendra Shivhare), and unforgettable experiences. 🎉

This year, I had the honour of taking on not one, not two, but three speaking engagements in one day - a personal record! 📈 Here's a recap of the exciting sessions:

1. Morning Panel with Neil Hoyne, Chief Strategist at Google: Moderating a discussion on "The Changing Customer Journey: How to Adapt" was a thrill. Neil's insights on integrating AI into our strategies while keeping the human touch were eye-opening. 🌐🤖 We explored how generative AI can empower marketers to excel in 'test and learn' initiatives, dynamic pricing, and personalisation. The key takeaway? AI is a powerful tool but not a replacement for strategy. Use it to enhance, not replace, your strategic thinking.

2️. Keynote on CX Marketing 2.0: Post-lunch, I took the stage to keep the energy high with a deep dive into "Maximising Your Storytelling from Long to Short Form Strategy." 📜➡️📲 We discussed crafting narratives that captivate across different content lengths, aligning with customer journeys, and leveraging AI to maximise our storytelling impact. A special shoutout to John for always putting me in the “after-lunch” slot (LOL) - I think I kept everyone wide awake! 😅☕️

3️. VIP Dinner Keynote: In the evening, I addressed senior marketers and other speaker peers on "The 2% Rule: Stretching Marketing Budgets to Outpace Economic Uncertainty." 🏦💡 We explored agile leadership, optimising the marketing mix, and the importance of adaptability in volatile times. The goal? To find that extra 2% to stretch our resources further and thrive despite economic challenges.

Throughout the event, the recurring theme was clear: while AI continues to be a hot topic, it’s not a standalone strategy. It’s a versatile tool in our toolbox - essential to learn and use but never to replace the human element in our strategies. 🧠💼

Beyond the sessions, DMS was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and make new connections. From coffee breaks and book signings to fun interactions like seeing ourselves as anime or Disney characters (Lisa Jeon), it reminded me that these events are as much about building human connections as they are about learning. 🤝📚

May 2024 - Was back in KL, Malaysia, always love popping up to this vibrant city - good food and friendly people! The first 2-day workshop of the week: “Advanced Brand Storytelling & Content Marketing”, we had 30 amazing attendees from various industries, including some who flew in from around Malaysia and Brunei. 🌟

The energy and engagement were electrifying. Nothing beats a room full of marketers sparking brilliant ideas and thought-provoking conversations. 💡✨

Workshop: Advanced Brand Storytelling & Content Marketing

An introduction to using narrative techniques in marketing campaigns. Storytelling is a powerful tool for engaging audiences emotionally and improving message recall. Studies show that stories stimulate brain areas responsible for empathy and memory, leading to higher conversion rates.

Key Insights:
📊 75% of brands could disappear overnight, and most people wouldn’t care.
📊 71% of consumers worldwide have little faith in brands delivering on their promises.
📊 70% of consumers prefer learning about products through content over ads.

Highlights:
Storytelling Frameworks: Participants learned the "Hook, Build, Payoff" and "Jenga Story Structure" theories for both short and long-form stories.

Data-Driven Stories: We learnt the importance of understanding your customer’s journey, pain points, desires, and how to engage with them. And Gen Z has broken the traditional marketing funnel!

Strategic Storytelling: It's not just about having a story but how you tell it. Have a strategy, distribution plan, and be able to measure and report ROI.

Influencer & UGC Power: 85% of users find user-generated content more influential than brand content. Influencer marketing and UGC are crucial for modern engagement.

3-Second Rule: In today's fast-paced world, capturing the first 3 seconds is critical. Then, aim for the next 15, and so on, to pull them through to your long-form content and build a relationship.

Repurposing Content: Turn one piece of hero content into multiple formats. As marketers we are time poor we know we should but don’t always. So challenge yourself to repurpose at least one into 2-3 different formats, we shared ai tools to help e.g eBook to blog post, video to podcast etc.

Practical Application: We storyboarded long-form content and created on-the-fly 15-second videos for social media. The final videos were fantastic—from new pet businesses to dramatic partnership ads for Heineken and Audi. 🚀
