Maureen FitzSimons was born in Dublin, Ireland, on August 17, 1920. She grew up in a lively family filled with music, storytelling, and strong personalities.
As a child, she was fearless.
She played sports with the boys, rode horses, swam in the River Dodder, and seemed happiest outdoors. Her family nicknamed her "baby elephant."

But actor Charles Laughton saw something others hadn't.
He cast her in *Jamaica Inn* and suggested a new name.
Maureen O'Hara was born.
Success came quickly. *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* introduced her to wider audiences, and *How Green Was My Valley* turned her into an international star.
But fame brought challenges.
Director John Ford admired her talent, yet their relationship was often difficult. During one confrontation, he struck her in front of cast and crew.
She refused to give him the reaction he wanted.

Years later, another director, John Farrow, repeatedly harassed and intimidated her. When he finally crossed the line, she hit back.

A scandal magazine published a fabricated story about her private life.
Many stars would have settled quietly.
Maureen sued.
In court, she produced her passport. The date stamps proved she had been in Spain when the alleged incident supposedly happened.
The story collapsed.
The magazine never recovered.
Later, after the tragic death of her husband Charles Blair Jr., she took over his airline company, becoming the first woman to lead a scheduled commercial airline in the United States.
In 2014, at ninety-four, she finally received an Honorary Oscar.
But awards were never what defined her.
