Global Insights for OSHC: Reflections from Sweden 2025 02/10/2025

I’ve just returned from the WERA Extended Education Conference in Sweden 🇸🇪.
It was a week of inspiring ideas, leadership conversations, and even fika (with cinnamon buns!) that reminded me how powerful reflection and connection can be.
In my latest blog, I share the key takeaways I’ll be bringing back to strengthen OSHC practice here in Australia.

✨ That’s a wrap on the WERA Extended Education Conference in Norrköping, Sweden 🇸🇪 hosted by Linköping University
What an incredible few days! I’ve:
🌍 Heard from researchers from 18 different countries
👀 Visited a Swedish Educare service in action
🤝 Met so many amazing, like-minded people in the OSHC/Extended Education community
📚 Picked up some priceless advice on how to survive the PhD journey
A huge thank you to Jennifer Cartmel, Bruce Hurst, and Marylin Casley for taking me under their wing – I’m so grateful for your support and guidance. 💛
Feeling inspired, grateful, and excited to continue my journey into OSHC and Extended Education research!

✨ Today is OSHC Educators Day ✨
To every OSHC educator – thank you.
You show up, rain or shine, with compassion, creativity, and unwavering dedication. You’re not just supervising – you’re shaping lives. You’re building trust, inspiring confidence, holding space for play and connection, and quietly planting seeds that grow into lifelong memories.
You may never fully realise the impact you have. But to a child, you may have been that “Lollipop Moment” – the one they’ll remember years from now as the moment they felt seen, valued, safe, or inspired.
Your work matters. You matter.
Today, I honour the difference you make – not just on special days, but every single day.
With gratitude,
Belinda Wright

🎙️ Behind the scenes at Learn OSHC HQ…AKA my house.
Who knew “quiet time” could be so noisy? Today’s recording soundtrack featured:
A surprise bark track courtesy of my dog
A tradie on speakerphone outside
The printer, auditioning for Percussion Solo of the Year with an impromptu ink-jet clean
Floorboard tap-dancing, canine huffs, and eventual snoring (same dog, different moods)
A car revving down the street like it’s Bathurst
The always-on-time postie (you rock! 🚴‍♂️)
My washing machine and dryer—totally my fault
One very confused bird vs. my office window (bird 1, window 0)
Amazing how all those everyday sounds hide… right up until you press “record.”

🎉 Coming soon: Thanks to your requests, our bite-sized Lunch & Learn sessions are transforming into a Self-Paced Webinar Series! Learn when it suits you—no background barking required.
Stay tuned for launch details!

🚀 Week 1 of Learning & Its Trajectories(Master of Education – Learning & Leading at UTS)
Our very first journal prompt stopped me in my tracks:“What can learning enable from your perspective?”
For me, this question strikes at the heart of why I started my own business - Learn OSHC.
When OSHC educators are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need, the ripple effects are incredible. Learning enables so much more than knowledge – it fosters empowerment, leadership, and meaningful impact.
From my perspective, learning enables:
✅ A confident new educator ready to handle anything
✅ A service leader who understands the Laws, Regs, and NQS deeply, operates a compliant and high-quality service, leads with assurance, and develops others
✅ Ongoing professional development and engagement
✅ Improved delivery of the NQS, Exceeding themes & best practices
✅ Greater knowledge retention and higher staff retention in the sector
✅ Wider recognition of the vital role we play in children’s lives
✅ And most importantly… better outcomes for the children in our care ❤️
Curious… what would you add to this list? What do you think learning can enable?Would love to hear your thoughts as I reflect on this in my Learning Journal!
