Today our rowers take on their biggest task yet at the Head of the River, here’s a couple words from Fraser and the yungins in the Yr10 VIII’s.

“What does it mean to row at HOTR?”

It means rowing sub 7:00.
It means beating Grammar.

It’s a season of the coaches telling us to accelerate, and for everyone except bow pair trying to do so. A season of blind coxswains and hitting bridges, a season of an unbalanced boat always down on bow side and a stroke man with “perfect” technique according to DX. It’s the result of a season into one race.

“How does it feel the night before HOTR?”

Hungry for the win.

Longing for that final 250 metres with your crew, with the boys cheering you on as you row through the valley of death.

Koomate Koomate HIGH!

On Friday, the swimmers from Sydney High went down to the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre to compete in the final GPS Swimming carnival of the season. Despite the COVID restrictions, we still saw a good outing from the High crowd who spent their Friday night watching a great show.

A stellar outing, especially from our young talent, placed us at a strong fifth place on the point score. Our intermediate squad also gave it their all narrowly beating Riverview. Last but not least, our senior boys left nothing in the tank by the end of the night and our Year 12’s finished their last season ever on a high note.

One of our own prefects Ike Matsuoka (12M), has also been selected as the Captain of the AAGPS swimming team, a fairytale ending to his 6 years of swimming at High.

“To me, this captaincy is a culmination of all my supporters’ dedication. Throughout my 6 years at high, so many people have supported me, and to finally give back to them is such a great feeling. To all the old boys, teachers and current High boys, I would like to thank you all for believing in me. Without you all, I would’ve never seen myself in such a privileged position. You have all taught me the importance of high spirit, and I am truly humbled to have such supportive people behind me. Thank you all, so much.”

CHAT WITH GPS REPRESENTATIVE ADITYA NIGUL

Me: Hi Aditya, glad we could finally get this chat in!

Adi: Yeah definitely been a busy week but pleased to sit down with you.

Me: So Aditya, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Adi: Hey, I’m Aditya - but everyone just calls me Adi. I moved to the school in year 11, and have been in the 1st XI since then. I'm a big fan of the game and sport in general.

Me: So being a transfer in y11, how difficult did you find the transition to maintaining your game whilst staying on top of your studies and adjusting to the busy life at High.

Adi: To me it was difficult at first being in a new place, but I'm an outgoing bloke and I made friends pretty easily. To be honest, I was worried that I wasn’t up to the ‘High’ standard but I made small goals and began pushing myself to achieve them, hoping to take myself to the next level both on the field and off. Cricket helped quite a bit, it took some mental stress off me and I learnt how to be really efficient and accustomed to the fast-paced lifestyle.

Me: Tell us a bit about the 1s this year. What goes on behind the scenes and how is it helping the cricket you guys play?

Adi: Bunch of rare units if I’ve ever met some. Behind the scenes, our coach Darius plays a massive role in getting us to the place we are on the board as of now, GPS title contenders. But as a team, we have the greatest bond and our culture helps us when we are under the pump. We’ve got senior players performing, inspiring the young Year 10 fellas to get some performances under their belt and currently everything seems to be working exceptionally. Touch Wood.

Me: For the non-cultured, could you explain what a ‘rare unit’ is and tell us about your role as the leader of the rare units.

Adi: A rare unit is basically anyone who can be seen as a peculiar, yet entertaining character. They are usually defined by their colourful off-field behaviour and undeniable energy. We divided the team into rares and non-rares. It gets us really hyped and some good competition amongst the lads in ted-ball and other fielding games, myself being the skipper of the rares. As my time at Sydney High is coming to an end, I need to pass on the legacy of the rares skipper. I think I'll give it to Raunak, we run the “rares” account together and it's loads of fun, full of updates on games, team songs and all the bants. It kind of acts as a memoir of the season and I reckon the boys will get a fair bit of nostalgia out of it soon.

Me: And being selected for the combined GPS XI, how did that feel?

Adi: Yeah, feels great. Unexpected to say the least, usually they don't like Sydney High. But I guess numbers do talk and it's good to see runs being rewarded rather than pockets. Proud to represent the school should be loads of fun. Hopefully down the track, a few of the other lads get in as well and get a nice tie for themselves.

Me: What's the next forward from here?

Adi: Next move, is to win against Kings and Newington and win the GPS for the first time in 40 odd years. The boys are putting everything on the line for it. Keen for the next few weeks, got a couple games for GPS too. Not sure what'll happen after this season. Could probably do with a rest. Been my favourite cricket season ever by far.

Me: Thanks for your time Adi, good luck with the games ahead!

Adi: Yeah no worries champ, was a pleasure.

On Friday, we saw over 200 scholar sportsmen mark the end of their 13 years of schooling. Seeing these boys, grow and develop into men of Sydney High over the last couple of years, has inspired the next generation of High Boys to reach your level of camaraderie on the field or in the classroom . As you enter the next chapter of your journey, we wish you all the best and know each of you will go on to achieve great things in life.

As Year 11 comes to an end, the 2021 prefects were handed their titles through a dodgeball game against the 2020 prefects. '20 sported their bright beach swimmers, bringing out their inner eastie, and 21' donned the tradie fits, harnessing their Bunnings skillsets.

Although we didn't witness the infamous halfcourt to win the game, there were some great sporting skills on display, on The Flats as '21 pulled off a comeback to win the series 2-1.

When asked how he worked this tactical masterclass '21 captain Jivan, responded with "Uhhh, full credit to the boys."

'20 Captain Alex had some wise words to say after his consolation dance battle dub.

"I guess it’s just how the cookie crumbles. We may have lost, but we lost with grace. To the class of ’21, you guys played a hell of a game, and I’m sure you’ll have a hell of a senior year."

We wish our Year 11's the best of luck with their upcoming prelims

Its frankly scary how much of someone's persona you can uncover by holding a 1 - 2 minute conversation with them. This short moment can easily break ur negative perceptions and stereotypes and give you an insight into different personalities.

"This guy yeah, he was like to me
'I was a teacher for 30 years, a taxi driver for 20, and now I'm a ju**ie. But on the plus side, my son's doing med so i suppose that's good.'
Its scary how you can have stereotypes and negative perceptions about people but you never really know their story. That you can only uncover by talking to them, and it's even scarier how quickly those perceptions can be changed" - A.G.

On Friday, 100+ year 11 boys toiled in 37 degree heat, collecting donations for the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation - an insipiring charity assisting physically, psychologically and financially disadvantaged people receive free transport to medical appointments they would otherwise not be able to attend. Not only did they collect hundreds and thousands of dollars for a good cause, but they gained insights into the lives of everyday Australians.

The year 11 cohort encourages all High Boys to partake in monumental experiences like these when they get a chance, as we believe it really does change perspectives for the better - along with helping an amazing cause.
