Better English for New Arrivals and Shy Asian Kids

I see a persistent problem for many Asian kids when it comes to speeches, dialogue skills, and tackling the issue of weak English skills from all angles of reading, speaking, listening, and writing. A lot of them are only good at reading. Creative writing requires good dialogue skills, and effective dialogue and speech necessitate good listening and speaking skills.

So, I asked ChatGPT to see if it could handle natural dialogue. It told me that it could, but that would require keeping memory, which it does not do. Therefore, natural dialogue is only possible within a single session with it.

Since I also pay OpenAI to use their AI, I can theoretically harness this capability. I created a chatting tool that keeps memory. I also developed several AI characters with different personalities and provided the "memory" feature for users to build a relationship with the AI characters. Finally, I built the ability for users to create their own characters so that they can have their own buddies to talk to. This allows kids to chat with AI and improve their English speaking skills using text-to-voice and voice-to-text technology, along with AI. Running the tool on a mobile phone provides a fairly realistic experience. Creating one's own AI characters comes with having an account on my website (a free one is sufficient).

Looking at the selective results coming slowly in and checking back at some of the results from 2024, I can see a pattern. Students who do not have any of the 4 areas in the top 10% generally do not do well and will not receive an offer.

We must assume that if students do not have any areas falling into the bottom 50%, then this is what is likely to happen:

1. Just 1 area in the top 10% would be acceptable for an offer from a low-ranked part-selective school.
2. If there is one area in the top 10% and one area in the next 15%, it is sufficient for placement into low-ranked fully selective schools.
3. If there are 2 areas in the top 10%, it is possible to secure a place in one of the top 10 selective schools without reaching the top 7 selective schools.
4. If there are 2 areas in the top 10% and one area in the next 15%, it is possible to gain a place in one of the top 10 selective schools without reaching the top 3 preferred selective schools.
5. With 3 areas in the top 10%, you can expect an offer from one of the top 7 selective schools, such as Sydney Girls, Sydney Boys, Baulkham Hills, and North Sydney Girls, without reaching the top 2 schools.
6. With all 4 areas in the top 4%, one would likely qualify for one of the top 2 schools, James Ruse and North Sydney Boys.

Song ngữ bên Việt Nam

Nhiều nước trên thế giới có chính sách song ngữ để giúp họ hoạt động tốt và cạnh tranh trong thời đại thế giới hòa nhập. Khả năng song ngữ của dân chúng trong một nước trở nên rất quan trọng cho các nước vẫn còn kém phát triển cả về giáo dục và thương mại. Bên Singapore, chính phủ có chính sách song ngữ với tiếng Anh là ngôn ngữ chính. Trong khi đó, bên châu Âu thì họ có chính sách tam ngữ với tiếng mẹ đẻ là chính cộng thêm hai ngôn ngữ khác. Hầu hết dân ở các nước châu Âu đều nói được tiếng Anh ở mức khá tốt.

Tuy Việt Nam có chính sách song ngữ với tiếng Anh là ngôn ngữ thứ hai, nhưng sự phát triển song ngữ vẫn còn rất kém. Vấn đề là khi giáo viên dạy tiếng Anh mà không có khả năng nói tiếng Anh trôi chảy và suy nghĩ với tư duy tiếng Anh, thì làm sao mà có thể dạy học trò tốt được? Lại thêm vấn đề là ở Việt Nam không có tạo ra các môi trường nói tiếng Anh "nhập vai" làm cho người ta phải nói hoàn toàn bằng tiếng Anh để có thể phát triển tư duy bằng tiếng Anh.

Vậy thì phụ huynh ở Việt Nam nên làm gì để giúp thế hệ trẻ phát triển khả năng song ngữ? Cái đầu tiên là phải tự thân vận động! Chờ nhà nước thì biết bao giờ mới thấy hiệu quả? Vì vậy cha mẹ gửi con em đến các trung tâm dạy tiếng Anh có giáo viên nước ngoài. Nhưng đây lại có một vấn đề khác. Hầu hết người nước ngoài sang Việt Nam dạy tiếng Anh là người Tây Ba Lô không có bằng cấp gì cả về dạy tiếng Anh. Họ đâu có phải là giáo viên thực thụ. Họ chỉ có thể hỗ trợ phát âm cho chuẩn và một chút về văn phạm. Nhiều cậu Tây Ba Lô trẻ còn không biết viết đúng đắn trong thời đại điện thoại thông minh, Facebook và TikTok. Họ bấm điện thoại nhiều quá nên chẳng muốn học viết một cách chỉn chu, thì làm sao mà dạy cho tử tế?

Mình nghĩ rằng cách giải quyết tốt nhất trong bối cảnh hiện tại ở Việt Nam là phải dựa trên công nghệ chuyển giọng nói sang văn bản, chuyển văn bản sang giọng nói và trí thông minh nhân tạo. Các công nghệ này bây giờ chạy tốt trên điện thoại thông minh. Chúng sẽ giúp các bạn và con em học tập nâng cao, học tiếng Anh bằng tiếng Anh và phát triển tư duy bằng tiếng Anh. Thêm một chiến lược nữa là học lại tiếng Anh như trẻ ở các nước nói tiếng Anh, bằng phần mềm như sản phẩm Reading Eggs mà các trường học bên Úc sử dụng rất rộng rãi cho trẻ từ mẫu giáo đến lớp 6.

Thêm một cái mánh nữa là cha mẹ nên cũng học tiếng Anh làm gương cho con và học lại cho đúng dùng các công cụ trên để gần với tiếng anh bản địa hơn.

Để giúp các bạn và con em ở Việt Nam, mình đã thiết kế một kênh YouTube và một trang Facebook để giúp các em học tiếng Anh và chú trọng vào khả năng nghe và nói. Đây là hai lĩnh vực kém nhất của học trò từ Việt Nam.

Chuẩn bị về giáo dục cho con em trước khi đến Úc định cư

Học sinh từ Việt Nam sang Úc định cư bị rơi vào cái bẫy cha mẹ là "đại gia" nhưng lại không tìm hiểu sâu về giáo dục bên Úc.

Trong nhiều năm qua, mình đã giúp nhiều em học sinh từ nước ngoài đến và nhận thấy rằng các cha mẹ từ Việt Nam hay bị vướng mắc về việc học tập cho con em ở độ tuổi tiểu học và trung học. Cái lỗi hoàn toàn ở việc đi Úc mà không tìm hiểu trước bằng cách nói chuyện với chuyên gia. Họ không biết rằng luật Úc cực kỳ khắt khe về học trò phải vào lớp học theo tuổi chứ không phải theo trình độ, và cửa vào giáo dục tài năng quá là khó đến nỗi cho thầy cô giáo bản xứ tiếng Anh thi bài lớp 6 vào trường tuyển còn có thể rớt!

Vấn đề đầu tiên là luật Úc bắt nhập học theo tuổi. Cho ví dụ, nếu một học trò đúng tuổi vào lớp 5 thì phải vào lớp 5 mặc dù không biết một chữ tiếng Anh! Không thể xin vào lớp 4 để có chút thời gian học tiếng Anh. Bên Úc không được học lại. Nếu đã bắt đầu học lớp 5 rồi thì phải vào lớp 5. Nếu sang ngay lúc năm học bắt đầu mà đang học lớp 5 bên Việt Nam thì phải học lớp 6 mặc dù không nói được tiếng Anh! Nhưng nói chung thì cái luật học theo tuổi là chính. Còn cái chuyện học lại thì có thể ok nếu tuổi còn nhỏ và hợp lý để vào học theo đúng tuổi. Cách duy nhất để tránh luật này là xin học ở các trường tư thật mắc tiền. Nhưng các trường tư này lại chỉ nhận học trò giỏi nên cũng không có cửa để vào!

Vấn đề trên tự động không cho phép học sinh từ nước ngoài theo kịp học trò bản xứ, trừ phi là đã học ở trường quốc tế bằng tiếng Anh ít nhất 4 năm! Cái giấc mơ kỹ sư bác sĩ trở nên mờ ảo :)

Vấn đề kế tiếp là cuộc thi vào các trường tuyển lúc đang học lớp 6 để vào lớp 7 khó đến mức mà phải giỏi hơn các thầy cô giáo tiểu học về nhiều mặt. Vì vậy không có cách nào học tiếng Anh và các lĩnh vực khác đến mức có cơ hội. Cách duy nhất là phải nhập cư khi con em chỉ mới 4-5 tuổi và học từ mẫu giáo lên.

Cách đơn giản nhất là học tại các trường quốc tế tốt tại Việt Nam (bằng tiếng Anh). Rồi dùng Mathemafix website để đánh giá và so sánh với học trò giỏi bên Úc. Khi nào sẵn sàng mới bay sang nhập cư và vào trường bên Úc. Cách thứ hai là bay sang nhưng chỉ "du lịch" và cho con học thêm ở một trung tâm dậy thêm hoặc thuê một gia sư dậy ở mức tăng tốc mà không ghi danh vào trường. Khi mà đã thấy hợp lý thì mới ghi danh chính thức. Nhưng đây là cách chơi của người giàu. Nhưng cách chơi này khó vì không có nhiều thời gian. Khi xin học chính thức vẫn bị ép về tuổi và phải giải thích tại sao mà quá trình học tại Việt Nam bị gián đoạn. Cơ hội cao là vẫn bị ép phải vào lớp học đúng theo tuổi. Cái cớ duy nhất phải là bị chiến tranh hoặc bệnh tật gì đó mà không đi học được!

Students with Indian roots form the majority of users on the Mathemafix website. It seems that Mathemafix's DIY approach is well-suited to Indian culture. Most people from India can speak English fairly well upon arrival in Australia. Somehow, Indians have that self-help culture, so my DIY approach is really popular among Indian parents. It is cost-effective and direct, with parents involved in the education of their kids.

What is fascinating as well is that some of my best Indian students self-learned; they did not go to tutoring centers, and later they came back as early as Year 8 to start their own tutoring service to help young kids starting in Year 3 prepare for the OC test and then Year 5 prepare for the selective school test. I told them that it was no fun to work at McDonald's to get some pocket money when they could sit at home, go to the local library, or do tutoring online! And they did.

This self-help culture is really great, and it does make a big difference in work ethics, academic success, and beyond. Now, some of them are at universities studying engineering and medical degrees, and they keep helping young kids with private tutoring while still using my website as the platform.

Các bạn đang chuẩn bị đi định cư bên Úc hay là gửi con em sang học trung học bên Úc?

Các bạn cần phải biết về hệ thống giáo dục bên Úc và cơ hội để có thể vào được các trường tuyển. Tiểu bang NSW có hệ thống trường tuyển rất qui mô trong khi các tiểu bang khác thì rất là rời rạc và rất ít trường tuyển. Cuộc thi vào trường tuyển tại bang NSW thì chủ yếu là vào năm lớp 6 để vào trung học tại lớp 7. Còn các năm sau đó thì rất hạn chế và họ chỉ thay thế học trò đã rời các trường tuyển. Đến năm lớp 9 thì có cuộc thi rất quan trọng vì vào lớp 10, nhiều trường tuyển sẽ nhận thêm học trò mới.

Đối với các em học sinh sang Úc du học ở mức trung học thì lại có vấn đề khác. Nhà nước Úc bây giờ không còn ép phải có IELTS 6 để sang du học nhưng lại bắt làm bài kiểm tra khả năng tiếng Anh và toán ngay khi đến Úc làm cho rất nhiều học trò thi rớt tiếng Anh và phải mắc kẹt ở các trường bổ túc cho đến khi có thể thi đậu. Vấn đề này làm cho cha mẹ tốn rất nhiều tiền và các em bị áp lực. Mathemafix có thể giúp các em chuẩn bị trước tại Việt Nam để khi sang Úc thì sẽ thi đậu và được phép vào các trường trung học ngay.

Các tài nguyên trên là miễn phí cho học trò bên Việt Nam để học ở mức căn bản. Nhưng nếu học sinh đang học ở các trường quốc tế và muốn tham gia vào các trường tuyển bên Úc hoặc xin vào các trường tư nổi tiếng (thậm chí thi học bổng) thì sẽ phải được đào tạo ở mức cực cao. Ở mức này thì con em cần trở thành thành viên của Mathemafix để có thể học và làm bài chuẩn bị cho các cuộc thi. Học sinh cần phải học thêm những thứ không có trong trường như là các kỹ năng suy luận văn, suy luận hình, suy luận toán, logic, viết truyện ngắn, v.v...

Trong quá khứ mình đã giúp cho các con em của người Việt Kiều định cư bên Úc nhưng lại về Việt Nam, Lào, ... để làm việc. Con em của họ học tại các trường quốc tế. Khi cả gia đình quay về Úc thì những học trò này có thể thi đậu vào các trường tuyển vào năm lớp 7 để học trung học. Hiện tại mình đang giúp cho nhiều học sinh tiểu học định cư bên Úc gần đây để chuẩn bị thi vào các trường tuyển. Overseas students struggle with the real English requirements at the high school level.

One has to wonder why Australia has changed its English requirement from a decent IELTS score of 5-6 to almost nothing and allowed students who cannot speak English to enter Australia to study at the high school level. These students must sit for a mixed test upon arrival, and most are sent to remedial schools to learn with special support until they can pass the basic test and are allowed to move on to the regular schools of their choice. Whatever the reason is, we now have so many overseas students stuck in remedial learning schools, and their parents have to pay a lot of money.

I have plenty of students who come from non-English speaking backgrounds, and they want to be part of gifted education! Imagine the sort of tests that even adult native English speakers struggle with, which these poor kids must face! So, I have to find ways to help them.

It is remarkable that text-to-voice and voice-to-text technologies have matured to the level that we now have realistic performance from mobile phones and WebSpeech for browsers. Generative AI has also become incredibly useful in conjunction with voice technologies to support these web applications. Properly trained AI can write better than the average teacher.

This is when I decided to design a whole suite of web apps to provide these students with tools to improve their English from all angles, and all of them are powered by AI to provide unlimited access to resources. I now have a Speech Assistant, Listening Assistant, Reading Skills, Verbal Reasoning, Classic Tales, Story Times, and many more writing modules. The aim is to get them up to speed so they have a chance to compete with native English speakers. Students from certain Asian countries, like Vietnam and China, are particularly weak in speaking and listening, even though they can write and read. This is where attacking English proficiency from multiple angles would be most useful for them. They can now prepare online in the comfort of their homes before they come to Australia.

Do Singaporean students have a chance to access NSW's selective schools?

I had quite a few parents from Singapore seeking help to access NSW selective schools. I was very surprised to find that the mighty Singaporean education system did not really cater to the top students as well as the famed system is supposed to do.

In Singapore, students are one year older than Australian students if you look at the year number. It means that Year 1 in Singapore is Year 2 here because they have two years of kindy. However, many selective schools in Australia did not pay attention to this, and they accept applications at the same year number. This means Singaporean students have an advantage of one year. Yet, every single child I encountered turned out to be behind the strong kids here who are preparing for the selective school test. It is fascinating to see that even a Year 8 student from Singapore, who is claimed to be very good there, may fall behind a very strong Year 6 student here!

So, what's going on here?

The explanation is that in Singapore, they have the idea that kids only learn certain things by certain grades, and the system does not ask students anything that they are not supposed to have learned. However, what we have here is the law of the jungle. They can put anything into the selective school and scholarship tests. Even some university-level knowledge finds its way into these gifted tests. When it comes to creative writing, anything goes, and kids may learn skills completely outside the school systems and can go wild (and will be rewarded) if they want to. The poor Singaporean kids are not familiar with this "lawlessness" in gifted education.

If you are in Singapore and on your way to Australia to settle here, you now know the game, and you need to get ready before you land here; otherwise, it will be almost impossible to access Australian gifted education.

The name of my website, Mathemafix, is an irony. It suggests that I focus on maths, and while it's true I love maths, my content is now heavily leaned toward English and learning skills.

The emergence of generative AI has recently added a massive boost. Mathemafix now provides strong support for English comprehension with the AI-powered module Reading Skills, Stories Time, Classic Tales, and English reasoning skills with Verbal Reasoning Skills, and creative and persuasive writing with the modules Writing Planner, Quick Writing Feedback, Writing Competition, Read Summarise and Write, and Copy Cat. Furthermore, I created English learning modules from all angles with AI support, including Tenses Assistant, Speech Assistant, and Listening Assistant. Now, students can learn English through Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking with AI support.

The AI support is now so expansive that it gives Mathemafix the ability to tap into unlimited resources. As soon as locally cached content is exhausted by an extremely hardworking student, the AI will generate more and make it available to all. This means we have one imaginary superhuman student who is pushing the system to its limits, only to find that the AI steps in and brings more into the system for all to use.
