Topic: Public Health (HEALTH PROMOTION OFFICER)

I would like to address the topic of Public Health and specifically the occupation of Health Promotion Officer. I understand that many individuals may be considering studying Public Health at an Australian University, and as such, I would like to offer my personal thoughts and opinions on this course.

It is important to note that my views may differ from yours, and I welcome any differing perspectives as a means to gain further insight and knowledge.

Firstly, I would like to highlight that this post is directed towards individuals who plan to apply for a Skilled Visa in the future. If this is not your intention, then this post may not be relevant to you.

1. Regarding the occupation of "HEALTH PROMOTION OFFICER – ANZSCO 251911", I will discuss this occupation only today. While there are various roles available within the field of Public Health, this particular occupation is the most commonly accepted and sought-after following the completion of a Master's in Public Health (MPH). It is important to note, however, that this occupation is only listed on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), which limits the chances of being accepted for general skilled migration. Applicants may still apply for a 190 or 491 state nomination, but the likelihood of receiving an invitation is lower as this occupation is not on the skill shortage list in most states, hence the minimum chance of getting invitations.

2. As per the ANZSCO skill priority list, Health Promotion Officer is only listed as a skill shortage occupation in the Northern Territory, and not in any other states. Source: https://www.anzscosearch.com/251911/

3. To be eligible for this occupation, a successful skill assessment under VETASSESS is mandatory, and it is important to note that a minimum of one year of closely related work experience is required for this assessment. VETASSESS lists three related designations, including Asthma Educator, Diabetes Educator, and Childbirth Educator. While there may be other related job titles, they are not mentioned on the VETASSESS website. It is also worth noting that these types of jobs are mainly available in public hospitals, which are government jobs. It is often difficult to secure government jobs without permanent residency, although there may be a limited number of similar roles available in other medical facilities. Nevertheless, with extended post-study work visas of five years or more, there is a good chance of securing a job within this field. I understand that some individuals may have an optimistic view of this course, and I see no problem with that. Public Health is undoubtedly a valuable subject to study in Australia. However, it is important to acknowledge that it is not currently considered a skill shortage occupation.

Therefore, my suggestion would be to communicate with senior students who have completed their MPH in Australia and inquire about their experience. Did they secure permanent residency through this course or by other means such as completing the Australian Medical Council (AMC) exam or receiving sponsorship?

I must emphasise that I am not a professional and the information shared here is based solely on my personal experience and knowledge. If you do not find this post useful, you are welcome to disregard it. However, I implore you not to be influenced by others when it comes to deciding whether or not to pursue an MPH. Only pursue this course if you believe it to be the best option for you.

I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

Thank you.

⭐️ Frequently Asked Questions ⭐️

After receiving a ton of messages, I have listed 10 very common FAQs for the upcoming students.
I hope you will find it helpful.

**All the answers are from my personal opinion/experience. It can be different from others. I am not a migration agent or a student agent. I do not have any relation with them.

FAQ 1: Can I pay my tuition fees and living costs by working part-time?
Ans: It's a bit NO. Part-time work mostly represents 20 hours a week, which will allow you to earn 20k-25k maximum in a year. If you want to earn and pay your tuition and living expenses, you need to work way more than 20 hours a week. At the moment, working unlimited hours is allowed, so you can earn much. However, after 30th June you may not be able to work more than 20 hours legally. So plan ahead. You may get cash-in-hand jobs but they are low-paid and not recommended.

FAQ 2: Can I get PSW after the 1-year course?
Ans: No. You must study for 2 years (92) weeks to be eligible for PSW and PR application. However, you can complete multiple eligible courses to cover these 2 years of study requirements.

FAQ 3: How long it takes to get PR/Citizenship?
Ans: It depends on which course you are doing. If you are doing a PR enlisted course which is also listed in the SOL list and getting regular invitations, it may take 3-4 years to get the PR. However, there are some occupations getting PR invitations earlier than that. Moreover, if your course is not enlisted and you are doing a diploma/graduate diploma, not completing your course on time, getting PR will be delayed (for example, 5-6 years sometimes)
Please do remember, you also need to obtain specific points to be able to apply for the PR. If your points are fewer, you may have to spend more time increasing the points. This will also increase the waiting time.

FAQ 4: Is there any benefit if I go to a regional area?
Ans: Definitely it has some benefits. It gives you extra PR points for living there and studying there. It also allows you to get an extra PSW year.

FAQ 5: Will I get a visa rejection if I enroll in a diploma course?
Ans: You are not restricted to enroll in a diploma course. However, you need to prove that you are a genuine student. If you have an education gap, a low CGPA, or if you have completed a diploma/bachelor's already, it is better not to apply for a diploma again. We should not give the case officer an option to refuse.

FAQ 6: Can I change my course after reaching Australia?
Ans: Yes you can change your course to another one after 6 months of your study in Australia. And it is highly recommended to change your course to the same level. For example, if you are a bachelor's student, you can change it to another bachelor's degree, not a diploma. This will breach your visa conditions and may lead to visa cancellation. Moreover, there are a few courses you can not change without ministerial approval.

FAQ 7: How much percentage of the scholarship I can get?
Ans: Based on your academic excellence you can get 20%-35% scholarships in any University. Some of the universities also offer certain scholarships to every applicant. However, getting a scholarship of more than 30-35% would be really tough. There are Dean's scholarships and other scholarships also available with a higher percentage. If you are a Ph.D. student, you can get full funding.

FAQ 8: Can I apply with my spouse and children?
Ans: Yes you can. You can apply as a family. You must show strong family and country ties to avoid any unexpected visa decision. Also remember, not all courses will allow your spouse to work full-time.

FAQ 9: How can I find my accommodation?
Ans: Finding accommodation could be a real struggle. Try to communicate with the community if there is any available. Also, you can try flatmates, and gumtree to search for shared accommodation. It is also recommended that at first find a shared accommodation to start with. Once you are in Australia, you will find better options to live in.
