After more than a decade in classrooms, there are more than a few things that university could never have taught me about teaching.
1. I do, We do, You do is one of the most effective teaching strategies there is.
There are countless teaching strategies out there, but explicit teaching works. Model the skill, practise it together, then let students have a go independently. It isn't flashy, but it consistently gets results.
2. Classroom management is just as important, if not more important, than your ability to teach.
You can have the best lesson in the world, but if students aren't engaged, listening, and ready to learn, it won't matter. Strong classroom management creates the conditions that make learning possible.
3. Paperwork takes up a lot of time. Sometimes more than the teaching itself.
Reports, plans, assessments, data entry, meetings, emails, documentation. Teaching is an incredible profession, but there is a significant amount of work that happens outside the classroom that most people never see.
4. Building relationships with families is undervalued but incredibly important.
When schools and families work together, students benefit. Positive relationships with parents and carers can make difficult conversations easier and often lead to better outcomes for kids.
5. Some students don't want to learn. Don't take it personally.
Every teacher wants to inspire every student, but that's not always realistic. Sometimes students are dealing with challenges that have nothing to do with you. Focus on what you can control, keep showing up, and keep giving them opportunities to succeed.

It's National Public Education Day, I'm sure you didn't know because no one cares but I just want you to know that I see you and thank you for all the effort you put in every day
the idea that kids these days are digitally literate because they spend all day swiping on apps is an absolute farce!

Are we supposed to pretend it's only the children of America who are susceptible to social media/smartphone addiction?
The rates of depression, loneliness and suicidality has dramatically increased in direct correlation with the rise of social media.
Well done on behalf of the children of Kentucky and many other American districts holding our tech lords accountable for stealing our data, our time and our mental health.
I hope many other groups hold them to the same standard.
