Dutch engineer Daniel de Bruin designed a machine to display the googol number in order to celebrate reaching the age of one billion seconds in the thirty-first year of his life. (A googol is the number with a hundred zeros following 1, that is, 10 to the power of 100.)
The machine consists of 100 interconnected gears. Each gear reduces the rotation speed of the next gear to one-tenth.
For the gear at the very end to make just one revolution, the gear at the beginning of the chain must rotate googol times.
Given that the system can make approximately 1,000 revolutions per hour, completing a googol revolutions would take 10 to the power of 97 hours, or roughly ten billion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion years.
