It is here. This morning, Nani finally opened the book.

It began with a simple question from Krish:

“Nani, why do we celebrate Diwali?”

Nani smiled. To understand the homecoming, she told him, we must begin at the very beginning.

So today we travel to Ayodhya, where four young princes are growing up together. Before the forest, before Lanka and before the great battle, Ram was a son, a brother and a much-loved prince.

Book 1, *Ram, The Beloved Prince*, is now ready to read on kahaninani.com.

This is the first of twelve Ramayana storybooks. A new book will arrive every Sunday as we follow the journey all the way to Diwali.

It’s coming! Just two more sleeps and our great Ramayana journey begins.

For twelve Sundays, we will travel from the palaces of Ayodhya into deep forests, across mountains and oceans, through promises, friendships, courage and difficult choices, until we finally find our way home on Diwali.

Krish is ready. Punklone has his listening hat on. Neither of them is very good at waiting.

This Sunday, Nani opens Book 1: *Ram, The Beloved Prince*.

Have you ever wanted to tell your children the Ramayana in all its epic wonder?

Many of us grew up with this story. We knew the flying chariot long before we knew an aeroplane. We imagined a vanara leaping across an ocean, a golden city set alight by his tail, and a powerful king with ten heads. The Ramayana made the impossible feel gloriously possible.

I wanted children to experience that wonder. But I also wanted a gentler way to introduce them to the story.

As I grew older, I realised that the events themselves were not what troubled me. It was the graphic detail with which some of them were told. A young child can understand that Jatayu died trying to protect Sita without needing to picture his suffering. They can understand that Surpanakha’s actions had consequences without hearing every detail of her injury. They can follow the battles, loss and difficult choices without carrying images they are too young to process.

So Nani has not removed the difficult parts. They belong to the Ramayana, and they matter. She has kept the action and its consequences, Ravana’s ten heads, Hanuman’s extraordinary courage, the magic, the friendships and the long journey home. She simply tells the frightening moments with care.

This is the Ramayana told the way Nani tells every story: truthfully, gently and with a little room left for wonder.

Twelve storybooks. One new story every Sunday, beginning with *Ram, The Beloved Prince* on 23 August and finishing on Diwali.

Krish has made a rather big request, and Nani might just know the right story for him.

It is filled with princes and promises, forests and magic, brotherhood and unexpected friendships, difficult choices and one very long journey home. It will take many Sundays to tell, so Nani has asked everyone to bring their listening hats.

Punklone, of course, has taken this instruction very seriously.

Can your best friend still be your best friend when they live far away? 💜

Krish has a problem.

His best friend Patrick is moving away.
A new house. A new school. No more seeing each other every day.

So, of course, he asks Nani.

A story about two boys who once studied together, shared their food, laughed, played and then grew up and went their separate ways.

Years passed. Their lives became very different.

Would you throw away a cracked pot?

Krish thought the answer was easy.

A soccer ball. A crash. One of Nani's favourite clay pots cracked down the side.

"It's ruined. Let's just throw it away."

But Nani smiled.

Then she told him the story of a cracked water pot that spent years feeling ashamed because it could never hold all its water.

What it didn't know was that every drop it lost was quietly helping something beautiful grow.

Sometimes the things we see as flaws become the very reason someone else smiles.

Maybe we don't all have the same strengths.

Maybe we were never meant to.
