Australian small businesses are approaching the year 2026 differently, especially when it comes to cybersecurity. What was known as a technical task before is now a daily business responsibility. Whatever the trigger was, be it experiencing it firsthand because of a data breach or maybe an industry trend, people are now prioritizing and strengthening their cybersecurity. There are now more affordable cybersecurity tools like VPN protection, message authentication, and real-time monitoring tools. People are also using stronger passwords and multi-factor authentication to avoid getting hacked. Networks are also upgraded and there are better device management systems. While there are new threats continuing to emerge, Australia stands firm and strong, equipped with better tools.

With the holiday season coming up, people are quite busy buying gifts for their loved ones. And holidays are actually one of the busiest and most vulnerable times as holiday cyber scams are rampant. Australians, especially the young ones, often buy things online because it’s convenient and accessible. It has become the new norm with 95% of Australians planning to buy their gifts online this holiday season. But do people really know how to shop online? Sure, you can search and see websites but how do you know if it’s legit? It is always recommended to slow down and think before clicking on ads or emails, especially if they came from Instagram or TikTok as fake advertisers often lurk around these social media sites. Always shop with trusted retailers from their physical stores or official apps. Holiday shopping should be joyful and not stressful.

Does your loved one know the password to your phone and social media accounts? Probably. This is actually a common thing, especially for couples and families, and although this is actually helpful in times when you forget your own password, it can also be a problem in the future. More often than not, people share personal information to their loved one out of convenience, trust, and helping each other. But what if something bad happens in the future? Cybersecurity isn’t only for big corporations and companies. They are also vital for personal security to protect you from getting hacked. Always update your passwords and security instead of using the same thing for all of your accounts. In this way, it’s only going to be you who knows the latest one.

There has been a rise of cyber threats to Australian and New Zealand organizations as ransomware groups increasingly target periods of reduced security staffing. They time their attacks during weekends or public holidays, according to the 2025 Holiday Ransomware Risk Report. Typically, security coverage is minimized and weakened during these times as most companies and organizations reduce their cybersecurity teams. A lot of these cyber criminals turn to generative AI to develop believable and detailed profiles to infiltrate the system. They time their attacks when the companies are in their most vulnerable state. Anyone and everyone can be a target. Cyber resilience is not solely the job for IT professionals but a collective obligation with the entire organization.

Despite the fear of AI eliminating tech jobs for people, co-founder of Secure Code Warrior Fatemah Beydoun thinks otherwise. Women still have great and strong opportunities in high-tech fields. She argues that while AI is helpful, it cannot fully replicate what’s uniquely human, especially when it comes to critical thinking, expertise in domains, and contextual knowledge. Women are underrepresented in Australia, with only 20% comprising high-tech fields. Beydoun advises women to specialize more than remaining generalists as certain niches are becoming more in demand. She also emphasizes the importance of soft skills such as good communication, great business strategies, and being able to be articulate.

When it comes to cybersecurity, you’re not just working for one individual. You’re working with everybody! You get to know what they are and they are not doing, if they can get hacked or not, and to simply learn from every person in the industry. Suman Yadav loves this aspect of cybersecurity because you get a good and broad idea and understanding of the company.
