At the Gottman Institute, they recommend 3 skills and 1 rule for having intimate conversations:

Rule: understanding must precede advice. Problem solving and advice should only begin when both people feel totally understood.

Skill 1: Putting Your Feelings into Words - not as easy as it seems, but with time and practice this can create much deeper and meaningful conversations.

Skill 2: Asking Open-Ended Questions - help each other explore how they are feeling.

Skill 3: Expressing Empathy - you may not necessarily agree with what your partner is saying, but validating each others feelings with understanding and love.
