🇦🇺 WHY IS AUSTRALIA SO STRICT WITH OFFSHORE STUDENT VISAS NOW?
If you’re planning to study in Australia, getting a COE is only part of the process. The Student Visa assessment has become much more focused on whether you are a genuine student and whether your study plan actually makes sense.
Under the current system, immigration looks closely at:
✅ Your reason for studying in Australia – Why this course and why this particular school?
✅ Your educational and career background – Does the course make sense based on what you have already studied and your work experience?
✅ How the course will benefit your career – You need to demonstrate the value of the qualification to your future.
✅ Your circumstances in your home country – This may include your employment, economic circumstances, family/community ties and career opportunities.
✅ Financial capacity – Applicants may be required to provide evidence that they can genuinely afford tuition, living expenses and travel costs.
✅ English ability – Depending on the applicant and provider, evidence of English proficiency may be required.
✅ Immigration history – Previous visas, refusals and compliance with visa conditions can also be considered.
The Australian Government has specifically stated that it is “strengthening integrity and lifting standards in international education” as part of measures that also place downward pressure on net overseas migration.
For offshore applicants, there is another important change: applications lodged from 14 November 2025 are processed under Ministerial Direction 115, which places offshore Student Visa applications into different processing priorities depending on factors including the education provider and its international student allocation.
⚠️ Important: The processing priority itself does NOT determine whether your visa will be approved or refused. You still need to satisfy the Student Visa requirements.
Bottom line:
Australia is still accepting genuine international students — but choosing a course simply because it is cheap, easy to enter, or gives you a way to come to Australia is increasingly risky.
Your course + previous education + employment + finances + career plan + supporting evidence should tell one clear and credible story.
