Dr Jake is preparing for his first community talks on how parents/caregivers can support their children develop stronger number sense, K-10, given the stronger focus in the upcoming new NSW syllabus. He will be focusing on practical strategies parents can use to develop number flexibility and reasoning. Dr Jake will emphasise the importance of moving away from an obsession with standard algorithms that can often be a distraction to stronger number sense. For Dr Jake's PhD thesis, he co-developed and supported implementation of integrated maths and science projects focused on real-world problems in Year 7 across one year. This was compared to another school who taught in a more 'traditional' mode. More favourable changes in motivations & achievement reflected the success of the projects. Busy day for Dr Jake. Morning with pre-service tchrs & the arvo supporting 2 schools -one on integrated STEM, one on how the new draft maths syllabus will impact tching in Stages 3 & 4. Now writing an opinion piece due in 3 mins🤣All supported with his cat, Suki

Dr Jake’s unique experience has him both teaching in the classroom & working with pre-service teachers. This week: teaching Stage 4 Algebra, Stage 5 Measurement & then policy analysis at Uni, looking at his work on the new K-10 maths syllabus. Lots of exciting changes ahead for teachers in NSW

After only 48 hours after the launch of MY STEM DR, Dr Jake has already received interest from schools all over NSW, as indicated by the red stars! This shows how much teachers want support with the new K-10 maths syllabus, numeracy & integrated STEM. Exciting times ahead!

Introducing Dr Jake who will be working alongside schools and their teachers to support them with some exciting curriculum reforms. As a current classroom teacher, he is well aware of the challenges and opportunities ahead. Dr Jake led the numeracy reforms across all new syllabuses, and was part of the team writing the new NSW Maths K-10 syllabus. He says “The reforms in mathematics and numeracy for NSW are quite significant, and teachers need to be prepared for useful changes to their teaching approaches. I am super pumped to be helping teachers throughout NSW on their journey!”

MY STEM DR is a new and exciting educational consultancy opportunity for schools and their teachers embarking on implementing new syllabuses in their classrooms. Dr Jake was part of the team working on the new NSW K-10 Mathematics syllabus, and led numeracy across the curriculum for all new incoming syllabuses.
