The Kingdom of Heaven is for such. Teaching children about the Catholic faith through sacred music.
Children love to learn, to sing, to ask “why?”, to be involved. Through a selection of activity and reading books, we hope to give opportunities to children to engage with their Catholic heritage on a level appropriate to their age.

STAIRCASE 4.
Mode 4 has an introverted and intimate character, it is at first underwhelming, but the more time one spends with mode 4, the more it lends itself to the text & feast. It is home to many beautify striking chants: the Gloria Cunctipotens of Mass IV, a gem of the Kyriale that contains an inner musical doxology from the 10th century; the Resurrexi Introit of Easter Sunday morning, relaying the intimate conversation between Father & Son; and the Conditor Alme Siderum, Vespers hymn throughout Advent ‘Bright builder of the heavenly poles, eternal light of faithful souls…’

STAIRCASE 2.
Mode 2 is a beautiful soundscape that is home to a number of famous pieces of the Gregorian repertoire: the Dominus Dixit Introit of Midnight Mass, simple & profound - the Father speaking to the Son on Christmas night; the Ut Queant Laxis, Vesperal Hymn of St John the Baptist from the 900s; and the Gloria Orbis Factor, sung by the faithful on most Sundays of the year.

Children’s First Chants - Learning to Sing introduces children to the wonderful pedagogic tool of the John Curwen Solfege Hand Signs. These hand signs allow children to connect with the diatonic scale on a kinaesthetic level, helping to develop their general motor skills which is so important as research shows from .
The Curwen hand signs also allow children to have an “inner hearing” of the notes, they can see & use the hand signs to mentally go up and down the scale, helping to internalise the music, creating a deeper connection with the repertoire.

Children’s First Chants - Learning to Sing.
Our newest resource for children to learn chant is almost in stock!
STAIRCASE 1.
Mode 1 is a beautiful soundscape that is home to some of the most famous pieces of the Gregorian repertoire: the solemn Salve Regina, chanted for almost a millennia; the Kyrie Orbis Factor, dating back to the 900s; and the stirring Introit “Gaudeamus”, which heralds in the Mass of so many great feasts each year.
A crucial part of a child’s ‘Gregorian Journey’ is to understand, even in the most simple of ways, the eight Gregorian Modes. In CFC - Learning to Sing, we have presented these modes/scales as little staircases, each step representing either a tone (normal sized step), or a semitone (a half sized step). Children thus learn to visualise what they hear and see as bigger and smaller steps in each mode.

Children’s First Chants - Learning to Sing will introduce children from as young as 4 to the beautiful & ancient soundscape of the Gregorian Modes. These 8 scales underpin almost the entire Gregorian repertoire and are distinct from the modern western major/minor paradigm.
In this image we can see a simple “staircase” that showcases the essential ambitus of Mode 2: RE, MI, FA, MI, RE. This little scale is then followed by a trifold alleluia Antiphon from the Divine Office in the same mode; teaching children to appreciate the essential scale of each mode as well as contextualising these scales in a simple piece from the Gregorian repertoire will allow children to tune their ear to the modes from the earliest age.
