⚡️The Law vs. Best Practice when it comes to Kids from 7. ⚡️

The Legal Baseline: The Australian Road Rules dictate child restraint choices by age up until 7. From age 7 to 16, a child must be properly restrained, but that restraint can legally be an approved booster seat or a properly adjusted adult seatbelt. Note how it says here, properly adjusted.
The standard seatbelt was designed using metrics based primarily on the "average man" from the 1970s (specifically a 78kg, 175cm male dummy called the Hybrid III), hence why when it comes to us women, sometimes the seat belt is not great fit for us.

The Physical Reality: Adult lap-sash seatbelts are engineered and crash-tested for bodies that are at least 145cm, with bones that aren't still in the process of ossifying. The average Australian child doesn't actually hit 145cm until they are between 10 and 12 years old.

If a child under 145cm uses an adult seatbelt alone, the lap belt tends to ride up over their vulnerable abdomen rather than sitting low on their strong pelvic bones, and the sash belt can cut across their neck rather than their mid-shoulder. In a crash, this can cause severe internal injuries (often referred to as "seatbelt syndrome").

This is why there is The 5-Step Test!!

Instead of relying strictly on age or an exact height number, the safest way to know if a child can safely ditch the booster seat is the industry-standard 5-Step Test.
They are ready for an adult seatbelt only if they can tick every single box:

Back: Can they sit with their back completely flat against the vehicle seat back?

Knees: Do their knees bend comfortably over the front edge of the seat cushion?

Sash Belt: Does the shoulder belt cross the middle of their shoulder (not riding up on their neck or slipping off the arm)?

Lap Belt: Does the lap belt sit low down, firmly touching the top of their thighs (not riding up across the stomach)?

Stay Put: Can they stay seated in this exact position for the entire trip without slumping or sliding down?

You find me a 7 year old that passes the 5 step test. If they fit in a Type G or Type E, they sit in one.

🚗 Is Your Backseat a Jigsaw Puzzle... or a Final Boss?

Let’s be honest: installing a child car seat is less like "reading a manual" and more like a high-stakes wrestling match with a heavy-duty strap that refuses to cooperate. If you’ve ever found yourself sweating, swearing, and wondering why there are three leftover clips, this is for you.

Stop living on the edge (and stop Googling "how to tighten car seat without losing a finger").

We’re bringing the pros to Bunnings Swan Hill to do the heavy lifting for you!

Tell me you bought your car seat online without telling me... 🫵

Sure, you could save a few bucks buying a car seat from a massive online warehouse.
But does that warehouse come out to you, show you how to use your new seat, squeeze into your backseat, show you how to install and make sure that bad boy is locked down tighter than Fort Knox?

Didn't think so. 😏

When you buy from me, you aren't just getting a box on your doorstep. You're getting me—your local expert—to personally install it and make sure it’s done right. Properly. The first time.
No algorithms, no automated chatbots. Just real, hands-on safety from someone who cares about your family.

Recent findings from Kidsafe Victoria are a wake-up call for all of us. Their Safe Seats, Safe Kids program found that an incredible 90% of child car restraints are incorrectly fitted or used. 🚙👶

Why this matters:

When a car seat isn't installed or used correctly, the risk of life-threatening injuries in a crash can be 4 to 6 times greater.

The common mistakes Kidsafe Victoria found:

• Twisted straps: A twisted harness or tether strap can’t distribute the force of a crash evenly.

• Loose installations: If the seat can move more than an inch in any direction, it isn’t secure.

• Incorrect routing: Seatbelts or ISOFIX attachments threaded through the wrong path.

• Seatbelt & ISOFIX used together: Never use both together. In the event of an accident, the crash forces cause both to act against one another, resulting in either or both failing.

• Top tethers: Often left disconnected or attached to the wrong point (like a luggage hook instead of an anchor point).

Don't be part of the statistics. It can be surprisingly tricky to get everything "just right", and as your child grows, their needs change. A seat that was perfect six months ago might need a height adjustment or a transition to the next stage today.

Keep an eye out for my Safe Seats, Safe Kids days. They are held at Bunnings Swan Hill.

I am always here to help. Whether you've just bought a new seat or want a check-up on your current set-up, come and see me. Let’s make sure your most precious cargo is truly protected on every single trip.

Your babe’s safety is my business! ☺️

🚙 National Road Safety Week 🚙

I see way to many kids not in boosters or sitting in the front seat. Taking your child out of a booster "because they turned 7" is one of the most dangerous things to do. Most 7 year olds will not be able to sit on the adult seat and have the seat belt sit correctly.

Did you know that your seat belts in your car are designed for an adult male? Same as airbags. An ill fitted seat belt will not protect them in an accident.
Oh whats that I hear you say, the seat belt doesn’t sit correctly on me? That is also common, but unlike your 7 year old babe, your bones have completely ossified and are at their strongest.

Give your child the 5 step test and check if they are ready.
