πŸ“šβœ¨ Book Week Magic at Surrey Downs! βœ¨πŸ“š

What a wonderful celebration of books, imagination and community!

Our school came alive with favourite book characters as students and staff embraced our Book Week Parade with incredible creativity and enthusiasm. It was fantastic to see students proudly sharing the characters and stories that inspire them. πŸ“–πŸŒŸ

A highlight was having so many families join us β€” cheering on our students at the parade before heading into classrooms for our Book Week Open Morning and enjoying book-themed learning together.

We were also delighted to welcome children and educators from Surrey Downs Kindergarten, along with some younger siblings who joined in the parade fun! πŸ’›

A wonderful morning of stories, creativity, learning and community β€” thank you to everyone who helped make our Book Week celebration so special! πŸ“šβœ¨

πŸŒŸπŸ“š Morning Groups – Building Strong Foundations for Learning πŸ“šπŸŒŸ

Our morning groups are an important part of the learning routine at Surrey Downs, helping students start their day engaged, confident, and ready to learn.

Through targeted phonics, reading and numeracy activities, students regularly revisit prior learning. This repeated practice helps strengthen understanding and supports important skills and concepts to stick in long-term memory.

Morning groups also create valuable opportunities for teachers to work with students in small groups or one-to-one. This means learning can be responsive to individual needs β€” whether that’s revisiting a tricky concept, providing extra practice, or extending students who are ready for their next challenge.

It’s purposeful, targeted learning in action β€” building confidence, strengthening foundations and helping every learner experience success. ✨

✨ Your child’s first story starts with a single idea… and at Surrey Downs, we help them bring it to life. πŸ“–

Our Reception students aren’t just learning to write β€” they’re discovering that they are authors.

Through our book-making program, children are creating their own stories, building confidence, sharing ideas, and learning that their voices matter.

From choosing an idea ✏️ to creating, revising, and proudly sharing their books πŸ“š, our young writers are developing creativity, language skills, and a lifelong love of literacy.

Recently, we asked:
πŸ’ β€œIf I was an author, I could write about…”

The answers were full of imagination, curiosity, and wonder β€” and we can’t wait to see where their stories take them next. 🌟

At Surrey Downs, every child has a story worth sharing. πŸ’›

πŸ—οΈβœ¨ Redevelopment Update – It's Starting to Take Shape!βœ¨πŸ—οΈ

There's been another exciting milestone in our school redevelopment!

Builders have now begun cutting the first third of the foundations pad, marking the beginning of preparations for the first major concrete pour in the coming weeks. With reinforcing, formwork, and services all coming together, it's exciting to see the foundations of our new learning spaces quite literally taking shape.

Despite plenty of rain, hail... and a little sunshine, work has continued steadily, and the vision for Stage 1 is becoming more visible each week.

Stay tunedβ€”we can't wait to share the next milestone as our new building starts to rise! 🏫

πŸ“šβœ¨ Early Literacy Through Play βœ¨πŸ“š

In our Reception classrooms, literacy comes to life through purposeful, play-based learning experiences that build on the curiosity and confidence children bring from kindergarten.

Our students have been exploring small world play, engaging with a story table, and creating their own booksβ€”immersing themselves in stories while developing the foundations for reading, writing and oral language.

These experiences encourage children to retell familiar stories, invent new adventures, expand their vocabulary, and experiment with drawing, writing and mark-making in meaningful ways. Through play, students develop comprehension, sequencing, creativity and communication skills while strengthening their confidence as young readers and writers.

By connecting to the play-based learning many children experience in kindergarten, our Reception students are supported to make a successful transition into school, where engagement, imagination and learning go hand in hand.

It's wonderful to see our youngest learners so excited to read, create and share stories every day! πŸŒŸπŸ“–

🚴🚦 Building Safe and Confident Riders! 🚦🚴

Our Year 4/5/6 students from Rooms 18 and 21 enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Modbury Road Safety Centre.

With many students riding bikes to school or in their local community, the day provided a fantastic opportunity to develop practical road safety skills in a fun, hands-on environment. Students practised safe riding techniques, learnt the road rules, and built confidence navigating real-life traffic situations.

The fun wasn't just for the studentsβ€”our teachers and SSOs also hopped on the bikes and joined in the learning! 🚲😊

A huge thank you to the dedicated volunteers who made the day such a valuable experience. They were especially impressed by our students' outstanding behaviour and the way they consistently demonstrated our RISE Values throughout the excursion.

We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented Surrey Downs, learning important life skills while having fun and making lasting memories. πŸŒŸπŸ’›

🎬✨ A Fantastic Day at the Movies 🍿😊

The students in Rooms 1 & 4, along with April, had the BEST day at the Regal Theatre 🎬🍿 watching Minions and Monsters! πŸ˜„πŸ’›

It was such a fun and exciting experience, with lots of laughter, smiles, and happy moments shared throughout the movie πŸ˜ŠπŸŽ‰

Outings like this are about so much more than just a film. They are valuable opportunities to build confidence, practise life skills in the community πŸ™οΈ, and enjoy positive shared experiences with friends and staff in a supportive environment 🀝✨

We are so grateful to Variety for putting on such amazing events and giving our students these wonderful opportunities πŸ™πŸ’› A big thank you also to our wonderful staff who supported the students on the day and helped make it such a smooth and memorable experience! 🌟
